There's a scene on this one episode of Sex And The City. The whole episode is filled with references to that old Barbara Streisand/Robert Redford movie, "The Way We Were". They sing the song. You know, the one that goes; "Memories, misty water-colored memories, like the corner of my mind?" And they're talking about the differences between Carrie and the Idiot Stick Figure With No Soul, aka Natasha. She's the one that married Big. Anyway, they're comparing Big and Natasha to Hubbell (Robert Redford) and the girl he chose after his relationship with Katie (Barbara Streisand) is over.
Carrie is like Katie (K-k-k-Katie). She's the curly (c-c-c-curly) haired girl, the wild one. The one whose personality is just too big for their love to contain. So Hubbell (and Big) both settle for the straight haired boring girl. The conservative one who is more wife material.
And there's this big scene, right in the middle of New York, after Big's engagement brunch. Carrie was invited, but she didn't go. She couldn't. And I mean, who could? That's heart breaking stuff. Especially when yours is already broken. Anyway, she sees him outside of the big hotel where it was held, and he walks over to her, and she reaches up to touch his face, just like in the movie. And just like in the movie, she says; "Your girl is lovely, Hubbell."
Mr. Big is obviously confused, even though he's this old school Frank Sinatra-listening kind of guy with a thing for the song "Moon River" which might as well define the entire genre of movies like "The Way We Were."
He tells her that he doesn't get it, and she says that he never did. It's maybe my favorite t.v. moment ever. She walks away all confident and affirmed, despite the fact that he's the one who couldn't commit to her only to turn around and get engaged just months later. And Carrie decides that some women just aren't meant to be tied down, they need to find someone just as wild as them. Which is totally me. Because even without the curly hair, I'm definitely a Katie girl.
Don't get me wrong, I loved being in a long, committed relationship, and I'm definitely up for that experience again. But I never want to have to settle down in order to be someone's wife material. I never want to change or c-c-c-conform.
There's a long list of things I want to do in my life, but there's only one real thing I want to do before I die, and that's live. I just wanna be me.
A romantic little scene right out of an old movie in the middle of a New York street would be that sweet, sugary Magnolia bakery icing on the cupcake. But I figure, you've gotta have that cupcake part too.
