First of all, Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes are God's little way of telling you to just keep on truckin'. Just wanted to put that out there.
Second of all, I am in such a good place right now. One year ago I was avoiding all my responsibilities, I was scared of my own shadow, I got blackout drunk (and it's time to face the music, I actually did have a problem - no more than any other college student, but a problem nonetheless) all the time, and basically the only person who got me through the days was Emma (thank you thank you thank you!!). Even as little as three months ago, I was still sleeping with The Wrong Guy For Me and drinking to get drunk. I was hostessing, and I loved my job, but there's just so much more I could have been doing. And in the past three months, everything has just literally fallen into place.
I have an amazing relationship, with someone to whom I go home at the end of the day, someone who brushes my bangs out of my face and lets me watch the Sox game even when he'd rather be watching the Pats. (In my defense, it is October.) Someone who didn't really uphold his end of last night's bet about the winner of Top Chef, so I had to walk the dog this morning despite emerging from the wager victorious. He stole food from Sel last night so that we could eat. Sandwiches, cinnamon scones, and red wine for dinner. Monday night football. He held my hand the whole time.
I've got an amazing job with a decent amount of responsibility (to which I am clearly living up - look at how hard I'm working right now). Someday I'll put "Locke-Ober Restaurant, Private Event Coordinator/Assistant Manager" on a resume and I'll land a management position at No. 9 (a girl can dream, can't she?). Plus, this opens up so much for me. It's such a high-end place, moreso than Sel ever was, and it's quite seriously an institution in this city. Working here at a higher level ensures that I'll learn everything I need to know about the business. And it's nice to look people in the eye and say, "Actually, I'm not just working in the service industry until I decide to go back to school; this is what I want to do with my life," and actually get a bit of respect for it. When you drop out and become a hostess, people raise their eyebrows in disapproval. When you drop out and become an event planner, it's more a look of polite confusion. It's never as judgmental.
Last night, Kris (Mike's brother) and his girlfriend Dina came over for Monday Night Football. They brought some of their homebrewed beer and they brought their dog. It was comfortable. I didn't have to put on a show or try to impress them. It was safe. The game was a complete shock, and I really wish the Bills had won, but hey, at least Torre pretty much lost his job last night. That was satisfying.
Basically, I am happy. I am secure. I am mature. I have grown so much. I needed to leave school; maybe now people will get it. I didn't trade in school and a chance at a good career for free time to party while working some crap restaurant job; I traded in school and my free time to party for a chance at the career I want in the field of restaurant work. I don't care what other people wanted for my future; I figured out what I want and that's more than a whole shitload of my friends who are still in school can say for themselves.
Finishing up my work now. Trying desperately to get out of here by six (since five passed me twenty minutes ago).
