I'm just an angry person and if you like American Idol or any of those other "reality tv" shows then you probably shouldn't read this. But if you do, you have been warned. And no, I'm not going to slap your crying baby.
If I'm watching any programming that has to do with reality it's either something real like stupid criminals since on those shows the lowest common denominator is going to jail or Top Chef where I get some ideas of what I'd like to cook. Whereas the rest of the world prefers their idiots to audition on tv for a singing competition. The pants idiot, is just that an idiot. He's not a great American. He's not to be revered. He's only a step above lowest common denominator. I'm tired of people on facebook thinking he's a genius. For what, making an ass of himself in front of a camera? People do that everyday on You Tube. Does that make them amazing?
Please for the sake of culture, please stop watching these shows. They are not good for you. I'm not saying what I watch is that much better but I do think Burn Notice or even Leverage or Lost (which I do not watch) had more thought put into them than The Bachelor or Survivor. Not to mention there are still script writers for those shows. Is that reality? Not any more than Battlestar Galactica.
If Survivor were real there wouldn't be elimination challenges or a tribal council or host that sees the contestants. They would actually have to survive on what they bring with them which would be a knife and an empty canteen so they can collect rainwater. And the way you get off the show would be either extreme sickness or death. And at the end of the season there really would be a survivor. Sure a season would go on forever or not depending on what survivor skills the contestants possess.
I know what I think or say on this matter makes no impact at all. But it does feel better to rant and rave. No, I have never watched a single episode of American Idol, but I do not want to. Do I let my daughter watch it? Sure, she's ten and thinks most of Disney's programming is great. I don't watch any of that with her either.
I would just prefer if they would call them what they really are. They are sensationalized game shows, pure and simple. In reality does a woman meet potential suitors wearing masks in a pre-paid environment? Do potential supermodels live in a magical supermodel house? Where does that happen? Not in reality.
Hell the original "reality tv" show The Real World wasn't real either. All it did was put people who normally don't mix together and had them live and lay around in a pre-paid environment. Not real. The Real World should have had them go to work, pay bills, cook their own meals with what they could afford not what a tv channel was willing to provide.
I guess The Osbournes started out as reality and moved into shocking for the sake of shocking garbage at an alarming rate.
Real "reality shows" are what we call documentaries. People starving in a third world country, that is reality. Animals overcoming all odds to survive, that is reality. Victims of violent crimes trying to put their lives back together, that is reality.
Reality is not pretty or entertaining. That's why we turn on our TVs. We want to be entertained. But we shouldn't believe something is real when it's just a sugar coated facsimile of what we want reality to be.
So I guess my biggest complaint is the semantics of what the shows are called.
