Emily's reading Harry Potter!

Jul 29, 2008 09:22

As of yesterday, Emily started reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. She was very daunted at first. In her mind she only saw a long book with enormous words that would trip her up. So we sat down and she read the first page out loud with a little help on some of the longer words. Reading out loud can be a pain for anyone at any age so I asked her if she would like to take the book upstairs. Emily is not the fastest reader and she's very self conscious about that. However her comprehension is right on target. It may take her a minute or two longer to read the page but she does understand what she is reading. She was still hesitant. I said that dinner wouldn't be ready for about ten minutes and if she would just read to page seven that would be fine.

About seven minutes later she comes downstairs needing help on a word. She's on page nine. She had gotten caught up in the story. By the time dinner's ready she's finished the chapter. And all of the questions she had after the first page have been answered. She knows the Dursleys' secret, she was in complete awe over McGonagall transforming from a cat to a person, she knows that Aunt Petunia is insanely jealous of her sister. She laughed over Uncle Vernon being hugged in the street by a short wizard. Twice.

I can't wait until she reads about Hagrid on Sirius Black's motorcycle.

Naturally we started watching Year 1 during dinner. We'll finish that up this evening.
