there's a great deal of comfort to be derived from a daily routine, if the routine is enjoyable.
ever since i was little, i loved taking the ferry into san francisco; it's a nearly stress-free commute, it's scenic, and as i got older, it represented freedom (and an escape from my mother). so now, when i commute into the city, the ferry ride is literally comforting.
when i get off the ferry, i get on my xootr, and as i've said before, there's an incredible freedom and joy that comes from wheels you work to propel. i get fresh air, exercise and exhilaration all in one effort. my xootr is one of the few wheeled activities that doesn't aggrivate my shin splints (and i have a very bad case of shin splints; 20 minutes on roller skates leaves me in tears and ice packs), so that's an added bonus.
and then i get to the office, which somehow manages to be mellow/zen and modern SF all at the same time. i put my xootr away, wash my hands, grab my water bottle, and hop on the internet.
this three step routine is repeated, albeit backwards, at the end of the day. my day is bookended; it has a structure i both understand and enjoy. my workdays in the city are routine because of this bookending, but they have plenty of room for sudden changes and last-minute plans. and the very nature of that reliability is comforting.
