plaza de americas
hundreds and hundreds of doves that eat from your hand, gathering around you like eager schoolchildren, awaiting one of the many meals they will eat that day. rising up to the sky at once like the sail of a ship, swooping down in perfect formation as if to form one white wing that is heard before it is seen like a clap of gentle thunder in the penetrating sunshine.
hundreds of symbols of peace eating presumptiously and impatiently from my hand, i laugh from nerves and excitement, at first afraid and then accustomed to their harmless pecks. two spanish children approach me shyly, eager to feed the birds as well. i give them whats left of the birdseed i purchased from two women, weathered by both sun and bitterness of life. i hope to never become as bored as they by the cloud of white amidst a maze of green (leaves) and red (brick).
the girl thanks me "gracias", the boy thanks me "thank you" and i nod in approval of his confident english, a recent aquisition of an elementary school education.
the doves wander off in search of more food. one strays, looking at me expectantly, and from the bench i pick up the last piece of birdseed. he climbs into my hand to eat it, stays a bit longer, and then he too leaves.
