Violence

So, I make no secret that I love violent media. Movies, books, television, comics. If it is violent, and usually the more gory and over the top the better, I will probably like it. My mom and I have arguments about it at times. She doesn't understand why i like this stuff so much, and tells me how sick it is. I tell her that I only enjoy the fake stuff, while she enjoys watching true life murder and forensic shows. I figure, at least the violence i am subjecting myself to is 100% staged, while hers is real. The way I see it, her shows are much more disturbing than mine. I don't have much stomach for real violence.

I actually enjoy this form of entertainment enough that I don't often cringe when I see it. I may tense up a bit at the right parts. I may even react vocally or jump when the occasion is just right. There are a handful of violent scenarios that will make me cringe in discomfort, though.

Eyes. I cannot take something being done to a person's eye at all. I have seen movies with nails driven through sockets. I have seen Un Chien Andalou (which has a straight razor slicing an eye open in the socket). I have seen eyes gouged out (Blade Runner anyone). Now, the loss of an eye isn't the issue. Seeing an eye popped out by a blow to th head that does not directly tough the eye or the eye socket doesn't really do much to me. Frequently, I will laugh. But, the second something comes close to the eyeball I get a little squidgy.

Crotch shots. These bother me simply because I have been kicked in the nuts one time too many. So, this is more sympathetic pain than anything else. In fact, I don't always cringe when there is an attack to someone's groin. Only in some cases. Not sure what makes one attack to the nards effective in forcing a cringe and another attack having no reaction. Sometimes, I even laugh at this one. Sometimes.

Heels/Ankles. No idea why this one bothers me so much, but I have a real problem with people having their heels damaged. I have seen movies with garden shears or razors taken to someone's Achilles’ tendon, and it completely messes me up. I just cannot take that kind of torture at all. Another one of those where I am not sure exactly why, but it may have something to do with loss of mobility and memories of painful heel injuries. Regardless, seeing this is almost guaranteed to get me to cringe and scream out a stream of profanity.

Self-inflicted. The final form of violence that really gets to me is when someone does it to themselves. Slice a person open, doesn't really get to me. Slice yourself open, and I am gagging. Good example of this is in the Saw movies. That stuff is fun to watch, except I have a hard time with it since a lot of the violence done is by the characters themselves. It doesn't even have to be voluntary. Coercion or mind control or whatever has no bearing on my feeling toward seeing a person injure themselves.

So, uh, yeah. Just random thoughts I had going through my head today as I watched television.
