In detective novels, when someone hires a private eye to protect them, they generally want said private eye to stay with them and make sure that they get out alive.
In detective TV shows (at least as of the eighties) they seem to prefer that he run off on some damn fool chase after whoever makes an attempt on their life, thus not only putting his own life in danger, but theirs as well. But it makes for a pretty good chase scene.
Having never been a private eye (or hired one), I cannot judge the "reality" of the situation (inasmuch as we may speak of such a thing); I leave aesthetic judgments to the reader.
