Third Firefly - [Voice]/[Action]

[Voice/Action]

[In the young boy's sleep, Seto tosses and turns, pressing a button on the journal so the voice turns on.  His choked sobs can be heard along with the soft rustling of blankets.  Then all goes silent...

A scream.  Not loud enough to be considered a bloody murder scream, though it obviously sounds like he's in pain or he's scared.  He ( Read more... )

[There are several seconds of sad silence before Giles replies.]

Hello, Seto.

...I'm all right.

Giles! [He almost sounds like he's going to cry now]

Y-You're okay...

[He's not. He's far from okay - he's sitting in the clinic keeping vigil over his friend, his two best friends are both lost to him, and he hasn't slept properly in too many days to count.

...but he can lie.]

I'm all right. I certainly appreciate the concern, though.

[He holds back a sob and exhales deeply to calm down, at least a little. If he had known what Giles had been through--and is going through, his reaction would be much different. But since that isn't the case, he's incredibly glad to hear from him. He was worried that...]

I'm so glad...I-I thought you wouldn't-... [sniffle]

[Giles keeps his voice soothing, reassuring, calm.]

A perfectly understandable assumption, given the situation as it unfolded.

...it's not the first war I've fought in. And I've told you about the sort of world I come from.

[He mumbles a soft "uh huh" as he takes a moment to calm down completely, taking in a deep breath as he does]

You're really strong and I know you've been through some tough things...but I was still worried...

I appreciate the concern, Seto. But now you see that I am all right - I can even see a little better than I could the last time we spoke.

...how have you been since then, by the way?

You can see better..? Was something wrong with your vision last time?

I've been okay! Still adjusting to this place.

Oh yes, didn't I mention? I've been blind or half blind for over a month now, thanks to the Malnosso. [And he was out on the draft. Digest that for a bit, Seto.]

Been adjusting well, then?

You were?? I had no idea that they could do something like that...D-Does that mean you were blind during the draft too??

Mhmm! I've met so many nice people here, so it helps a lot.

Half blind. And it's not as though I hadn't been trained to fight under such circumstances. [And he had, he just...hadn't been trained to fight that much to that degree under those circumstances in a rain forest.]

It always does. Having good friends is more or less a survival trait in this place.

You've trained while blind-- half blind?? That must be really hard.. [He tries to imagine doing something like that..he could relate to it, sorta, since he fights in pitch black back home]

I guess you could call it a survival trait in my world too, just having anyone is a survival trait.

Both. The sorts of monsters I fought back home generally preferred to attack at night. Some could make themselves entirely invisible at will. Sight was, um, not a very good sense to rely upon exclusively.

Having friends...or, um, allies, at the very least...is necessary for difficult situations, which Luceti certainly has no shortage of.

Oh wow! So you're like me then! [Someone who knows what it's like to fight at night, yay!]

That's true. Friends help you when you feel lonely or when you're sad.

We do seem to come from very similar worlds, at the very least.

...you know I'll do my best to help if you're feeling such things, Seto. I-If you want.

Uh huh! Very similar. [And that surprises him. He didn't think anyone else here would live in such a depressing place like his world

Okay that makes him perk up even more] Really?? Thank you so much Giles! I'll do the same for you.
