Adrian Belew - Side One

Jun 20, 2006 15:11

One thing is for sure, anytime you press "play" on an Adrian Belew CD, you are in for something surprising. And Side One is no different.

At a tight 33 minutes, the latest offering from the Twang Bar King blisters with energy. It wastes no time drawing you in with the first track "Ampersand," a dense and heavy song which serves as a good vehicle for Belew's multilayered fret work. Probably the disc's most interesting track is "Beat Box Guitar" which features rhythms you might find on a Fatboy Slim tune.

Belew is joined on Side One by an all-star rhythm section of Primus bassist Les Claypool and Tool drummer Danny Carey, and you could not find to better performers to compliment what Belew does. Claypool is his funky out there self and Carey lays down a strong bottom beat.

Side One is the first of three solo efforts being released this year while he has some time off from his day job with King Crimson. The aptly named "Side Two" and "Side Three" are listed as "coming" on http://www.adrianbelew.net/ , the guitarist's official website. But until then, fans of Adrian Belew's guitar madness have this short, but powerful recording to hold them over.
