Since I took on pimping this show quite sometime ago, I think today is the perfect day to start. Because tonight, at 10 pm on HBO, you can see the very first episode of John from Cincinnati

I know the reviews on this one are wildly mixed, and a lot of reviewers are coming at it very pissed that he abandoned Deadwood for this project. I admit I wish he'd at least finished Deadwood before launching this series, and I'm very leery that those two movies will ever get made at this point.
That being said, I'm still looking forward to checking out JFC. The cast is terrific and it actually looks like the kind of thing I could easily get hooked on. Though I'm not sure premiering it right after the series finale of The Sopranos is a wise move since we're all going to be reeling from that one, I'm pretty damn certain. In fact, I'm sure I'm going to have to watch the premiere of JFC again because my mindset won't be in the right place to give JFC my full attention right after the final frame of The Sopranos plays out.
Yes, I believe you're right. I'm not watching The Sopranos myself, but I can imagine watching the very last episode of that show doesn't exactly make you feel like watching JFC... But I suppose they're just hoping for the big crowds watching Sopranos won't have the energy to budge from the sofa or change the channel.
Like I said, I think JFC is show that will take a little patience to get into. But I'm deeply intrigued!
While surfing is intriguing, I was planning to pass on this show because of the negative critical reaction and because it sounded a bit...well, pretentious. But I read the NYT review and came to this:
Dayton Callie, who played Charlie Utter in “Deadwood,” here plays a similar role as a sentimental drug dealer who beats up deadbeat clients but alone in his car listens to Sarah Brightman singing “Time to Say Goodbye.”
I'm charmed by this enough to give it a shot. I've never seen Austen Nichols in anything and it seems like the show could hinge on him. I've seen the kid who plays Shaun; he's an adorable real-life pro surfer, but it's discouraging that the NYT reviewer found him to be the most charismatic cast member.
