LIES, SEX AND GENES Part 10

The next morning....
Kou held the phone to his ear, listening absentmindedly to the rings indicating the call had been put through as he played his jigsaw pencil, attempting to place all the correct colors in the correct row. The sounds of the people around him were ignored as well, having grown used to them over the years. There was laughing coming from the common room by the cooler, the sound of a news reporter's phone ringing urgently before being hastly picked up and the usual conversation of: Hello? Yes,... hmm. I'm on it..., followed by the sound of the phone being slammed on the desk.
Kou's eyes slid over the empty, yet cluttered desk where Takato usually sat, still waiting for someone at the Takaba residence to pick up the phone. He knew for a fact that Takato wouldn't be in today, even if the boss called him in on an emergency fee. Kou had left him with his hangover at his apartment, and he was probably still passed out on the couch.
Kou honestly couldn't believe he was playing detective/ matchmaker for his friend with a guy, even if it was Takato. He sighed and checked the phone number again before redialing to see if he could annoy someone into picking up. Finding Takaba Akihito's family number had been extremely easy considering the fact that Takaba-san had worked some freelance photography for their paper in the past, so his name had been in company records. As secretary/ researcher, he'd been able to access the information without any questions asked.
Kou bit his lip when the ringing had occurred 10 times or more. Was nobody home or was someone just ignoring him? He sighed in relief when there was a click indicating someone had finally picked up.
"Hello?" a mature female voice asked.
"Hi, I'm Kou calling on the behalf of..."
"I thought our phone was on a no-calling list for telemarketers," the woman said, obviously annoyed.
"No, I'm not a salesperson. I'm just trying to reach your son, Akihito...," Kou amended, checking quickly to make sure his boss wasn't around to catch him wasting company time.
"Oh? I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions," the woman said, her voice apologetic yet ringing with confusion. "Why have you called us and not his home phone?"
Kou froze, his brow knitting in question as he set the pen he had been playing with down. "He moved out of his apartment a few days ago and I don't have the current number. What's his new number?"
There was a pause at the other end. "I've heard nothing about this. Can you leave your name and number so I can give you the new information when he calls?"
"Uh, sure. But, how about your other sons' numbers? I'm told he was last seen with them..."
"Huh? I believe you have the wrong person. My son's an only child..."
Kou's heart sank and his eyes went wide. "I am talking to the mother of Takaba Akihito, correct?"
  "Yes."
"Your son is about 23, with chestnut hair, very skinny, and kind of a loner?"
The woman paused, then croaked, "Yes..." Then she cleared her throat and began screaming, "Is he okay? Why are you looking for him? Why did you assume he has brothers?..."
Kou didn't know which question to answer first, so he began to tell her the story that he was looking for him because he had a friend who was dating him (not mentioning he was male) and Akihito had left after an attack with two people who claimed they were his brothers without saying goodbye.
"An attack?" the woman coaked before hesistantly asking, "Was it the Snakes?"
Kou bit his lip, suddenly feeling like he was one of those police officers delivering bad news to parents after a car accident. "I... Yeah, it was..."
There was gasping on the other end and the sound as if the woman had fallen back into a chair suddenly. "Oh God... I told him to register... I told him... oh God..."
  "Miss?"
There was a sound of sobbing on the other end that broke his heart. After a few minutes, the mother asked, "Are you there?"
  "Yes."
"Can you help me find my son?"
Kou balled his hands into a fist. "I will try."
"What...," the woman cleared her throat, "What did you say your name was?"
"Kou and you can reach me at..." He gave her his cell phone number and address before hanging up. He didn't immediately put the phone back in the receiver but held it in his hands and stared at the tiny holes as he contemplated what he was to tell Takato.

Fire rounded the corner, approaching the room where he was told 'A' had placed the boy, and was immediately taken off guard by the sound of pounding coming from the door.
"LET ME OUT, YOU BASTARD!" someone screamed on the other side.
Why had the boy been locked in?' Fire used his master key, opened the door and the boy came tumbling out, lying in shock on the floor of the hallway. This boy was the one 'A' liked? He didn't look all that special. His hair, though an unusual color with even more unusual shine, was messy and his clothes were disheveled. With a look of horror, he noted the boy's hands had cuts and were bleeding. "Your hands?! Are you insane!?" He stooped down to take the boy's closest hand and examine it.
The boy pulled it away and looked up with defiant, dark brown eyes shining in a beautiful face. Fire finally realized what had captivated 'A'. This boy had spirit. "What did you expect? I don't like being imprisoned!"
Fire paled. 'Imprisoned?' Memories of when 'A' had locked him up for 'his own good' made him pale. "Why did 'A' lock you up?"
The boy's eyes became even more furious as he picked himself off the ground. "Because I refused to come and be his good little sex toy," he grumbled, as though he expected Fire to already know this.
Fire's face contorted in fury. He grabbed the boy and slapped him hard across the face. "Don't you dare tell such lies."
"He's not lying," a voice called from behind them.
Fire turned around to see 'A' in a towel with only a master key hanging from his neck...
