First solid(ish) food!

Bren has been ungodly fussy and annoying lately (is it his digestion? lack of sleep? what, for the love of god, WHAT?) but we did have some good times lately, so I wanted to document them before I forget that they exist. Today he had his first experience with solid food! In the world of babies "solid" means "a soupy mess mixed with just enough of something to be not quite liquid." Think oatmeal, if you mixed a normal breakfast portion with about a gallon of milk. In this case the something was plain rice cereal, which every book and doctor in creation suggests as a baby's first solid food because they have almost no chance of being allergic to it. It comes in little flakes like instant mashed potatoes, and you can mix it with formula or breastmilk or water. I went with breastmilk, figuring that the taste will be familiar and it will actually have nutritive value that way. We bought little rubbery baby spoons today just for the occasion, and we already had some cute baby bowls that Aunt Bernie bought us from Chinatown with stylized sheep and dragons on them. Brennan was extremely skeptical at first, which was fun because he has a great "what the f--- are you guys thinking?" look. After he got the hang of it, though, he started kicking with glee, opening his mouth for more, and fussing if I wasn't fast enough with the spoon action. Pictures of the historic event are in this month's Yahoo photo album: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/nsechler/album?.dir=d3ccre2&.src=ph
All in all it was a success, and some good messy fun. The other cute story that I should share before I forget it happened a few days ago after he finished nursing. Normally when he finishes nursing, Brennan is either completely asleep or ready to GO- head up, looking around, making noise, wanting to play. This time he had just woken up from a nap, had a good big meal, and was up on my shoulder to be burped. But instead of looking around and wanting to hurry up and play, he laid his head down on my shoulder. For a second I thought he was falling asleep, but then he started cooing softly in a sort of high-low pattern: OOOHoooh....OOOOHooohh.... It was SO sweet and loving I almost cried.
