I think I know the answer to this question. Between the statistics and good ole Occam's razor, I know what's most likely. But what websites and books say about statistics do little to help without hearing from individual people, at least for me.

I know it's far more likely that a woman's water will not break before labor, that it is not often the first sign of labor (even though TV tells us it is). I have also read that when a woman's water breaks, it's rare for it to be only a little bit. But (again), I just need to talk to be sure.

This afternoon, I went to the bathroom. After finishing my business, I wiped thoroughly (as I always do). I left the bathroom and felt a release of water. It was only enough to wet the bottom of my underwear. It didn't trickle past my underwear.

Fortunately, I was wearing a pair of white underwear that I had recently put on, so it was easy to know what I was seeing wasn't old. It was mostly clear, apart from what looked like a bit of mucus like I've been losing for the past week. One problem I have being certain that while the liquid did not look or smell like water, I had been drinking exclusively water (and a lot of it!) for the several hours preceding this, so I don't know that urine would have had the smell or appearance that it usually would.

I changed underwear and have been wearing a panty liner for the last hour and a half. The panty liner feels slightly damp, but I have no way of knowing whether that's from sweat or just normal end-of-pregnancy leakage.

I can say, however, that I have been really, really fortunate in one area of pregnancy: I have not experienced any real incontinence. I have yet to lose urine while laughing, sneezing, or coughing. There have been times where I've gone to the bathroom and gotten urine on my fingers when I wiped (I guess I was less done than I thought?) but nothing compared to the amount today.

Like I said, I'm sure that it's much, much more likely that it's urine or discharge or something that's definitely, definitely not my water breaking. But this is my first pregnancy, so not only am I totally clueless about water breaking, but I'm clueless about labor in general.

I'm 38 weeks, 3 days today. I had an appointment yesterday. When my doctor examined me, she said I was still only 1cm and at about -3 station, but about 50% effaced.
