Spam me about induction

Hello everyone! I am scheduled to be induced this friday. I will be 39 weeks. I have a clotting disorder (APS) and inject blood thinners twice a day so getting me off my blood thinners in time for delivery makes induction necessary. Anyways, I have a platelet count of 66,000 and the cut off for epidurals is 100,000. I would love some stories ( Read more... )

Yeah, I was going to add that induction can probably work better or worse depending on the timing (in regards to the mother's readiness), amount and speed of administration, and the type of drugs/drug cocktail given.

I was first surprised that it actually had an adverse effect on a rapid labourer, but when the body isn't ready, it's not. :-(

Btw., OP, there *is* a possibility of getting some i.v. pain relief, even narcotics, but the timing and choice of opiates is essential. Maybe talk to the anesthesiologist to exploit all options in case you need something? The reason why they want to avoid narcotics is the breathing depressive effect on the newborn. As long as he/she's still intrauterine and getting everything via placenta, that isn't an issue, but you don't want to have a drug overhang when he/she's born. There are some fast acting and fast disappearing opiates, though, so maybe if you've got an experienced anesthetist, they might be able to give you something at least in the beginning, to take the edge off - if you need it after all.
