The Birth of Arthur Joseph!

Jun 20, 2012 19:11

I just wanted to update everyone here on one of my previous entries.
Arthur Joseph was born on the 16th June 2012 at 12:57AM.  8lbs 4oz and 21 inches long.

My waters broke on Friday the 15th at 9PM (just after a nice big bowl of ice cream!), and as Arthur had remained persistently breech the Doctor wanted me to go in right away to make sure I wasn't labouring too quickly.  We got there at 10:30 (had to run around gathering the last couple of things) and I was contracting every 5 mins, fully effaced and 2cm dilated. After a quick US confirmed Arthur was still breech they decided to do the C-section right away.  I guess they were worried that I would progress too quickly and the cord might prolapse or something.

I was pretty freaked out by this because I thought I'd have time to talk to everyone and let them know my concerns about everything.  I got to talk to the anesthesia Doctor and he was great, he wasn't comfortable not giving me duramorph so agreed to cut the dose in half.  The spinal was unpleasant but not too bad, he had to get a smaller needle than he would normally use for my spine and I had to hunch over quite a ways which was very uncomfortable with a baby head in my ribs!  He gave me zofran right away and the worst thing I noticed was the intense nerve itching, which was like my skin was being burned from the inside, thankfully that only lasted for a minute or so.  He also gave me something to calm me down but not make me woozy, so I was totally lucid when Arthur was born.  They didn't lower the curtain but my husband Brian was able to stand and watch him be born.

For pain afterwards they gave me Toradol, one nurse was really pushing me to try percocet so I took half of one of those but since they took out my IV I've just had the strong ibuprofen.  The pain isn't as bad as I thought it would be.  Getting up for the first time was really the worst thing,  I am wearing a belly binder which was provided by the hospital and this thing is AMAZING, it really really helped cut down on the pain.
