Finishing Up

I just had my baby shower on Sunday and got almost everything I needed/wanted. I did not get a diaper bag and after looking at them to buy for myself I've started to wonder: If I'm going to EBF do I REALLY need one? I tend to like extra large purses so is there any reason I couldn't just get something like one of these and not have a "real" diaper

I kinda danced around doing the same thing, but there is the diapering angle and not just the bottle feeding angle. My friend who's baby I watched, she tried to scale her bag back to an insulated lunch bag from 33, and found out that she still needed the space for small necessities like diapers, wipes, creams, teething cream, little hand toys to keep amused and 1-2 changes of clothes. If you get a bag for your car to keep that sort of stuff in and only carry a pod with enough for one change (with the option to run to the car if you have a baby with a poo-splosion or a leak or something), you may get away with it. I'm intending to scale like that eventually, once I weed out what I need versus what I don't.

I was thinking I could just put the little things in my purse as well? I didn't see much difference in doing that and spending $4,000* on a diaper bag and then putting my things in it. Does that make sense? haha

*I tend to exaggerate. Its really more like $40-80 because somehow I can't seem to find a less expensive diaper bag I actually like haha.

Diaper bags don't have to be that expensive. I have this one from Gerber and it was pretty cheap!

Wow, I really like that! Finding a diaper bag I actually like was really difficult. I've somehow managed to take my bottle-fed, cloth-diapered baby on many outings without a decent diaper bag - I just use a little backpack I got from Nestle. But that one ... hmm ... I may have to pick up!

If there's room enough in your purse for things you need to take for baby, then just use your purse..... I have a decent size purse, and if I'm only running somewhere for an hour or two it's what I use, I only use my diaper bag if we're going to be gone for a long time.

I absolutely hate purses and refuse to own one haha. So obviously I needed a diaper bag. From my experiences so far though, you could get away with a big purse for a bit. A few diapers, a small pack of wipes, maybe a plastic bag or two if you can't find a garbage can for some reason, and an extra change of clothes. From talking to my friend with older kids, it's when kids get bigger that you need more room. Diapers and clothes get bigger, they want snacks and water bottles/sippie cups, you need coloring books/crayons/toys/books to entertain them, etc. My friend said potty training in the worst, having to carry around several extra pairs of undies/pants for the kid at all times ( ... )

I gave up using a purse when I used my diaper bag- I just stuck my wallet and stuff like that in the diaper bag. I think the best thing about diaper bags are the bottle holders. I carried a water bottle for myself constantly, and when Baby is older a sippy cup. Some purses have them as well.

Also, look for something easily washable. You'll likely have some sort of poop/ spit-up mess at some point (or ya know, that apple you put in there and forgot about until you couldn't figure out where the fruit flies were coming from...).

I carry way too much stuff in my purse (and I carry large purses too), so I wouldn't have room for anything more than a pacifier, lol. I think it depends on how much "purse stuff" you carry. If you just have a wallet, then sure, a large purse could probably substitute for a diaper bag.
