☓ Age: 24
☓ Personality:
Shinra is weird. Very weird. In fact, Shinra is so weird that he can arguably be considered the weirdest character in Durarara, and that’s saying something considering the series is host to some of the most eccentric people out there. Even his future wife roommate makes note on how Shinra certainly is not a decent human being. Most of Shinra’s oddball nature can possibly be attributed to his derp of a father and poor parenting skills, considering the man told a four year old Shinra take a scalpel to a struggling, naked dullahan and dissect her. For science! Any child subjected to that was bound to grow up with more than a couple of loose screws. And Shinra did.
For one, he likes to dissect things. Be it a headless woman or just some random guy that caught his interest on the streets of Ikebukuro. He even asked one Shizuo Heiwajima if he could take a blood sample to study his super human strength; when they were children, no less. Luckily, Shinra has managed to make a career out of his creepy hobby, and became an unlicensed doctor to the underworld of Ikebukuro shortly after graduating high school. It’s been noted that he’s very talented at what he does, despite how young he is.
Secondly, Shinra never shuts up. Ever. He loves to talk, even if it’s just him rambling out loud about nothing in particular. Shinra’s mouth is so annoying that people have knocked him unconscious just to get him to pipe down. Not that it never really works, though - he’ll just continue from where he left off the moment he wakes up. It wouldn’t be all that bad if Shinra discovered a little thing known as tact, but that’s just about as unlikely as hell freezing over.
He’s also in love with a headless Irish fairy. The very one he dissected at four years old under his father’s caring instruction, to be precise. From this stems his two most favorite subjects - Celty Sturluson and love. Most of the aforementioned rambling? That would be him either happily proclaiming his love of Celty, or just him going on and on about love and everything related positively to it. He even talks his clients’ ears off over it while extracting bullets from their bodies. When people say Shinra is weird, they mean it.
General creepiness aside, Shinra’s not that bad of a guy. Even if he did hide the fact that he knew who stole his dullahan girlfriend’s head and where it was for twenty years. Oops. That would be Shinra’s crowning moment of Jerk Ass. In his defense, he did lie to the woman he loves because… well, he loves her (hell, he took a knife wound in middle school for someone else just to impress her). Considering the fact that all of Celty’s memories resided in the head she didn’t have, Shinra was terrified that the moment she found it she would cease to be the dullahan he’s known and loved for two decades, if she didn’t up and vanish altogether. Still, it was cruel of him. But shortly after Celty confronted him over it, he promised he would be truthful from that day onward. Unfortunately for everyone, that opened the floodgates for his mouth.
That out of the way, he’s really not mean or cruel. At all. Shinra is a shining example of someone with a true neutral disposition. Hell, he’s friends with Izaya Orihara; and any requests for dissection are only for the aim of satiating his curiosity. Not even his crowning moment of Jerk Ass can be considering cruel, as it was done more out of fear than a strict desire to hurt Celty. He peddles his services out to anyone willing to pay him (he’s mentioned his price is fairly cheap in comparison with other underground doctors) - even Russian assassins - and never cares or bothers much with the fact that the people he’s working with aren’t very trustworthy. Think of him as a medical Switzerland.
Shinra is also a derp, and a very cheerful derp at that. He’s always smiling (unless he’s working or he’s pissed Celty off again), and always willing to offer his opinion over subjects that may or may not concern him. He has proven that he can be responsible when he wants to be, much to the surprise of those who know him, and once even managed to coax answers out of a terrified girl who tried to kill Shizuo. Of course, that doesn’t even begin to outweigh those loose screws in his skull…
☓ Abilities:
The uncanny ability to piss off everyone ever? And survive? Shinra’s proven on multiple occasions that he can take quite the beating and walk it off, a prime example being when he annoyed Shizuo to the point where he knocked him unconscious; Shinra didn’t even notice he had been out until it was politely mentioned, and even then he was shocked to hear it. Celty also nearly punched him through a glass window, and he didn’t get so much as a bruise. There was also an incident later, in which he was shot multiple times a near point-blank range, and survived the attack. While it was never confirmed, there have been hints that he was able to live to see another day thanks to his durability. Though it didn’t stop him from being bedridden for a few weeks.
Other than his ability to not die from blunt force trauma (and maybe internal bleeding), Shinra’s more convenient skills involve many years of illegal surgical practice. He’s a talented doctor, and fairly knowledgeable about many different sciences that aren’t a part of his own field (psychology, for instance), though his own expertise lies in cosmetic surgery and general wound treatment (like extracting bullets and stitching up knife wounds). General shady mafia business and whatnot.
Despite his usual silly demeanor and outlook, Shinra is very very aware of the people and situations around him and catches onto things quite easily. A key example would be during his school years when he spoke to Izaya for the first time, and remarked that the other “loved humans” even though they had never held a conversation before.
Further expanding upon that - he’s also pretty good at reading body language, when he’s not busy chattering away at a mile per minute.
☓ Weaknesses:
Shinra has many of these. He’s a motormouth who doesn’t grasp what tact is, he’s less than trustworthy, he’s physically weak, he’s socially inept, and he seems to have made a second career out of pissing people off. Shinra also has a habit of distancing himself from what he considers to be boring or "normal" people, and hence why the only friends he has are Shizuo Heiwajima (the man with seemingly unlimited strength) and Izaya Orihara (a bastard who's in love with humanity). Despite all of that, it can be said that Celty is Shinra’s greatest weakness, as she is his motivation and driving force.
☓ Strengths:
The only real strength Shinra possesses, aside from being creepily aware of everything around him, is that he’s good with children. There are little to no personality strengths that don’t revolve around his intelligence, and he has zero physical ones (durability aside). But that’s fine because it rules out the possibility of Shinra being a threat, which is arguably the greatest asset to his illegal career.
☓ Intranet post sample:
[There’s a moment of video, so brief it’s only a few seconds long, with a soaked labcoat blocking the view. It’s probably a good thing it cuts to text shortly, because several hacking coughs filter through the static, followed shortly by the sound of retching.]

Hello! I seem to have been washed ashore (I was almost positive I had drowned, but there seems to be no onset of hypoxia...).
Oops, where was I?
Oh yes! An unfortunate who happened to wash ashore, lost and wet, alone and without the comfort of his love... it’s rather tragic, really. If anyone would be so kind as to tell me where, exactly, I am - it would be greatly appreciated!
☓ Log post sample:
The message came in at around 10pm. Usually, Shinra did not take such late appointments, especially regarding surgery and related requests, but he did want to stay in this particular employer’s good graces and the pay was very good. There was no need to rush out the door, so he takes the time to make a cup of coffee and leave a note for his future wife roommate, giving an address and estimated time of return just in case - when one works with unpredictable human beings, they tend to expect the worse.
Getting to his destination takes longer than walking out the door did. Shinra tended to avoid taxis and subways out of personal preference (and maybe minor cases of motion sickness). Walking has its own dangers, though, what with all the gangs cropping up around Ikebukuro these days. There’s not much harm in being out in the open, aside from the laughing remarks and snide comments on his choice of dress, but Shinra’s not a big enough target for them to actually start trouble, and some of them know him from past jobs anyway.
They’re rather boring, though. No real difference from everyday “normal” people, in Shinra’s eyes. Tolerable at best. If it wasn’t a matter of necessity, Shinra wouldn’t associate with them at all. Which isn’t to say that he didn’t like his job, for he did enjoy it to a degree, it gave him a lingering rush of that thrill that first hit him twenty years ago when he vivisected a dullahan, or several years ago when he patched up Shizuo Heiwajima and Izaya Orihara in the aftermath of their spats. It wasn’t the same, no, but it was better than nothing.
Tonight’s job is no different from the usual monotony. Or maybe a bit more exciting, actually. Cosmetic surgery could be rather enjoyable at times, and downright heinous at others. From the photographs that his employer attached to the email, his patient is a young male of about twenty years or so, who died from blood loss during a shoot out. Shinra’s task was to rearrange his facial features so he resembled another man (a member of a rival group, maybe; he didn’t particularly care about the details). It would be difficult, as dead flesh was so inflexible, but Shinra would see it done.
It takes thirty minutes to reach the compound, give or take. The underlings recognize the doctor and usher him inside, where another gives him the envelope with his pay, which is safely tucked away before Shinra allows himself lead along to the designated room for the operation. His employer is there, as is the body, and he sets his bag aside, rummaging for gloves and necessary tools so they can get started.
“Do you have pictures?” Shinra asks, the first words he’s uttered since arrival. “Working from description will be difficult and time consuming.”
