Being a vampire hasn't always been as hard for me as it has for some in my family. Sure, I did the rebellion thing like most everyone did and went against Carlisle and his vegetarian rules for a while, but I never was bitter about actually becoming a vampire. I was just a guy who would have been killed if not for what happened. Plus, I never would have met Rose and I'm thankful for that every day.
I live with my family, the Cullens, and we're not your average vampires. Unlike the rest of our kind, we don't feed off of humans. See, we're vegetarians. Right now we live in a nowhere town in Washington not far from Seattle. In fact, these days, I'm thinking we're a little too close to Seattle. Or a little too close to the slaughters going on there.
It was supposed to be an easy in and out trip. We were going to see what was going on in the city, kill a few newbies if we could, and then get the hell out. We were ready to have at it, but it wasn't supposed to end up like it did. We weren't expecting to be ambushed. If not for Jasper's knowledge on fighting the new vampires, we probably wouldn't have made it. He was more torn up than I was and somehow I managed to sling him over my shoulder and get us back to the hotel. Thanks to Alice, everyone else was already on their way, but I called Carlisle to let him know what happened and then passed out on the bed.
When I came to, Jasper was in the bed next to mine and Rosalie was there holding my hand looking as beautiful as ever even with that worried look on her face. Jasper was awake for the moment and I could hear him talking to Esme and Alice. Rose was sitting next to me while Carlisle did what he could to fix me up. We usually healed easy enough, but we were so ripped up that it would take a while this time.
"How's Jasper?" I asked Carlisle, trying to sit up enough to see my brother. He pushed me gently back down on the bed and said he was going to be fine, but that we both needed to rest. Just then the door opened and I looked up to see my other brother bust through the door. The prodigal brother finally makes it back and I'm stuck in bed. I grinned up at Edward when he came more into the room, asking how we were. I ignored him.
"Long time no see, brother."
