Personality and Abilities
Daxter's Personality:
At first glance, Daxter is a person who appears to lack any real depth, or a true personality, whatsoever. He's usually loud, brash, obnoxious, hot-tempered, vulgar, and rude. He sometimes has a short attention span and can be called a cowardly, wannabe badass and ladies' man with an ego that's apparently big enough to swell his head many times over. The only thing he ever seems to have more confidence in than himself is Jak, and he often claims himself to be the reason that his friend is so great.
While pretty much all of this is true, it's still just the surface of his character. He is loud and almost always obnoxious, flirty, likes to shoot off his mouth, shies away from danger, and spends lots of time trying to impress others with exaggerated tales of his heroism. He’s also somewhat cynical and disrespectful to authority figures, especially the ones he dislikes. There’s also not a lot he seems to truly care about(mainly Tess, pants, and Jak).
Beneath all that annoying stuff though, is a loyal person who will do what it takes to help his friends when necessary. He’s actually pretty brave for someone so small, and is easily capable of holding his own when he has to and can assist others in ways that are helpful but overlooked by most people. He doesn’t like to just run into danger willy-nilly like his best friend does daily, though he does have a daring streak and has done many dangerous things on his own: exterminating metalbugs, leaping out of a speeding car to catch leaper lizards, riding on missiles, etc.
Even as thoughtless and inconsiderate as he can be, he’s protective of anyone he gets close to in his own way, and would follow them to hell and back...although he’d fuss and complain the whole way just because he doesn’t like it, and someone has to do it. If a subject he knows a friend is sensitive about is about to come up he'll try to indicate it's not a good idea, and if someone does something to really hurt a friend he'll be one of the firs to want to get that person back
Given the fact that almost no one ever sees him as more than an obnoxious talking rat, he has had little reason to be anything more. Some people even get annoyed by him before he even says anything truly obnoxious and sometimes before he even opens his mouth opens his mouth. But if one watches his mannerisms closely there are moments when other aspects of his personality become noticeable, such as the fact that even if he dislikes a person, how he responds to them depends on how they interact with him. A person he ia annoyed by that likes him, such as Brutter the Lurker, he'll be loud and complain at without being mean. Someone like Samos though he can swap insults and disrespect with all day...though he seems to somewhat get along with Young Samos.
He’s actually a little insecure and sometimes lacks that confidence he pretends he has no shortage of, so praise, especially from the people he’s close to, means a lot to him: like in Jak II when he won the Class Two race by himself and Jak said he was proud of him, Daxter was obviously surprised and touched and even willing to share the credit for the win with Jak. Those people he likes and don't treat him like an annoyance or something to be ignored altogether, he is somewhat less annoying to and doesn't really seem to need to puff himself up to hold their attention: Jak, Tess, and even Sig are the most obvious examples even though Sig does still get annoyed by him.
A noticeable trait of his us that he's very animated and expressive. His gestures and expressions generally leave little doubt as to his overall mood. He also often uses nicknames when addressing people, though the nature of the name is directly related to something about the person and how he feels about them.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
Although Daxter doesn’t show any real special powers, he does have a resistance to small amounts of Dark Eco which affects his mood negatively but has no permanent effects. Light Eco also affects his personality but in a positive mellow way.
He's very strong for his size, as long as it doesn’t require him to put his weight into it. This has been seen in the fact that he can hold up shoot Jak’s gun, has helped him get loose from a Dark Eco mutant, and has taken on enemies larger than himself barehanded...but he couldn’t turn the valve at the Pumping Station and had trouble removing a metal bar holding a large stone ball in place.
He's developed a decent bit of agility and is a good climber, and can outrun Jak even when running upright. But those those traits are only really seen when he puts his mind to it...otherwise he's pretty clumsy.
