i really enjoy the contrast between this year and last.

last year, my summer was compressed into a single week when i flew to PA, drove to NY, and took the train back to MI and crushed everything fun i could into that week because it had to last until christmas.

this year, summer started unexpectedly early when timmy told me laurel would be in MI city in about 2 hours, and we went off on a madcap adventure that really should have been better planned (ie we should have known we were staying overnight and would also want bathing suits). i was then informed that i had three weeks that i could use to do whatever i wanted through the summer. number one went to visiting miss lily in CA and taking her to disneyland for her very first trip at 15 months. (and also finding a jackie ball. that was good too.)

this was followed by last weekend in chicago because the CSO was playing Dvořák's 9th (New World) Symphony, which is far and away my favorite of all symphonies ever. so far, i've heard the Philadelphia Orchestra (outside at the Mann), the New York Philharmonic (in a very crappy seat where the trumpets sounded like shit - stupid Miller Auditorium) and now the CSO playing this one. i like it more and more each time i hear it live.

last saturday we went to the art institute, which is spelled on EVERY SIGN as "ART INSTITVTE" which is difficult to pronounce. there is an installation involving videos of a clown taking a crap in the modern art wing. he is screaming loud enough to be heard several rooms away.

we took the train, charles. justin complained because it was late both directions (approx. 40 minutes into chicago, 20 on the way back to kzoo) and explained that this is why no one rides the train in the US. but he also said we should go with you and liz on a superliner somewhere/sometime.

week number two will involve awesomeness, and finally getting my birthday present from last year (a trip to the amish farmer's market and free fudge/cheese good things), and also being lazy and swimming in justin's parents' pool.

week three will supposedly involve brittany visiting, not that we've really made plans yet, but that's probably my fault, because i keep not being home and able to plan such things.

then there's my second niece, who will be born in aug/sept, and a wedding, and the visiting of both nieces in california for christmas. whee!
