Rating: PG

Warnings: blind Blaine

Word Count: 1,520

Summary: A lonely boy in a playground missing his mom finds his new best friend in a boy with wild, curly hair and a tear-stained face. Now he invites him over for a picnic, but it doesn't go entirely as planned.

A/N: This is a sequel to Sandboxes. This might become a verse that I'll dabble in occasionally, because I'm becoming rather attached to this Blaine. A huge thanks to shandyall for reading this over for me, and being amazing in general.

Sometimes Burt likes to sit on the back porch and watch them. He’ll bring them a pitcher of Kool-Aid and crack open a beer for himself, settle into one of the wooden porch chairs with the daily newspaper. Ever since Blaine and Kurt met on the playground a few weeks ago, they’ve been inseparable. Burt will pick Blaine up mid-afternoon (Blaine’s parents ecstatic that he’s finally made a friend), bring him back to the house where Kurt has been anxiously making everything perfect.

Blaine’s hand is so much smaller than Kurt’s was when he was six, but grips Burt’s hand just as hard when he leads Blaine through the house, either to Kurt’s room or the backyard. Blaine stays close by Burt’s side when they walk, his curls brushing the skin of Burt’s arm and even after a few short weeks Burt already feels protective of Kurt’s new friend.

And then Kurt will bound in, taking Blaine’s hand from Burt’s and Blaine’s face will light up with a smile, practically bouncing as he lets Kurt lead him to wherever their play spot is for the day.

Today it’s a picnic in the backyard. Burt helped Kurt make the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches beforehand, picked up chocolate chip cookies and Goldfish from the supermarket the day before. Kurt spent the morning spreading out a blanket in the grass, filling up the picnic basket and laying out old pillows for them to sit on. Blaine giggles when Kurt pushes him down onto the pillows, his hands quickly scoping out what’s around him. Kurt’s lined up several of his stuffed animals to have lunch with them and Blaine’s fingers move over a stuffed bunny, grabbing it and bringing it to his chest.

“Okay,” Kurt says, settling down onto the cushions beside Blaine, sending Burt a quick smile before turning his attention back to his friend. He takes Blaine’s wrist, maneuvering his hand.

“The sandwiches are here, these are cookies, and here we have Goldfish which you definitely need to try because I made sure Dad bought them just for us, and then here we have strawberry Kool-aid but you should let me pour it because you’ll probably spill it everywhere,” Kurt explains everything in front of them, Blaine’s face screwed up with concentration as he tries to remember where everything is.

They eat their sandwiches and Kurt chatters excitedly about the show Burt let him watch today, the new toy he got yesterday. Blaine doesn’t add much to the conversation, mostly just listens and nods excitedly, munching on cookies, with a look of such bliss on his face that Burt actually thinks Kurt is the best thing that’s ever happened to the kid.

Burt’s standing to go inside, confident that Kurt can watch out for Blaine easily enough, when Blaine reaches for another cookie, his hand hitting the jug of Kool-aid, knocking it over with a splash. Kurt shrieks as he’s splashed with the sugary red juice, the liquid spreading out over the blanket. Blaine frantically tries to right the pitcher but just ends up knocking the cookies and Kurt’s stuffed bunny into mess and Burt’s on his feet, knowing what’s coming.

“No!” Kurt shouts, swatting Blaine’s hands away and grabbing up the bunny. Blaine recoils as if he was burned and then Burt’s there, taking in Kurt’s horrified face and Blaine’s heartbroken one.

“Benjamin got dirty,” Kurt says, tears already pooling in his eyes. Burt quickly rights the jug of Kool-aid, inspects the stuffed animal. One ear is dyed red, the fur along a paw a lighter pink, Kurt’s knuckles white from how tightly he’s gripping it. Burt knows how special that bunny is to Kurt, knows how easily Kurt gets emotional lately.

“He’s ruined,” Kurt sniffs, clutching the animal to his chest. Burt sighs.

“Kurt, why don’t you go inside and start running him under some cold water, okay? I’ll get this cleaned up and then we’ll come inside and help you.”

Kurt nods, shoots a look at Blaine before turning and walking into the house. Burt scrubs a hand over his face before turning his attention back to Blaine, who’s pulled his knees up to his chest, tears tracing down his cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers, pressing his forehead into his knees. “I’m sorry.”

Burt grunts slightly as he sits down beside Blaine (he’s getting way too old to be sitting on the ground) rests a hand on the boy’s shoulder. Blaine jumps slightly at the contact, but stays retreated into himself.

“It’s okay, Blaine. Accidents happen. It’s not your fault.”

Blaine shakes his head, his face moving towards the general direction of Burt, eyes red and he rubs the back of his hand under his nose.

“It is though,” Blaine protests, eyes filling with more tears. “I always ruin everything. Cooper says so.”

“Then Cooper’s an idiot,” Burt says, matter of fact. Blaine sniffs beside him. “Look, Blaine. Kurt lost his mom a few months ago and he’s been having a hard time with it. His mom gave him that bunny when he was a baby, which is why he got upset.”

Blaine’s curls bounce as he presses his face back into his knees and Burt desperately wants to get through to Blaine, knows Blaine’s already had his share of hardships, doesn’t want the joy he’d seen on his face earlier to be lost because of this.

“Hey now, bud. Come here,” Burt says softly, gently pulls Blaine’s tiny body onto his lap. Blaine buries his face in Burt’s shoulder, pressing himself tightly to Burt and Burt can’t help but wonder when the last time Blaine’s actually been held like this.

“Kurt’s not mad at you, okay? You make him happier than I’ve seen him since his mom died and he’s not going to throw that away because of some spilled punch.”

Blaine clutches his fingers in Burt’s shirt, shifting against him. “Really?”

“I promise, bud,” Burt says and he means it. “And I’ll tell you a secret. Kurt spilled his milk this morning with breakfast. All over the table.”

A small giggle makes its way from Blaine.

“Now, let’s clean up this picnic and then go inside,” Burt says, nudging Blaine off his lap. Blaine’s still a little timid, only helping to pick up what’s immediately around him, stuffed animals tucked under an arm when they go back inside, the other hand securely in Burt’s. Burt has Blaine sit on the couch while he goes to Kurt in the bathroom, who’s stopped crying but is staring forlornly at the stuffed bunny.

“Looks like you got most of it out,” Burt says, settling down on the edge of the bathtub beside Kurt.

“The ear is still pink,” Kurt mumbles, staring down at his lap. Burt puts a hand on Kurt’s shoulder, draws him into his side.

“You know it was an accident, bud. Blaine’s trying really hard to be a good friend to you.”

“I know,” Kurt nods, leaning heavily against Burt’s side.

“Besides,” Burt continues, gently taking the bunny from Kurt for a moment. “I think this adds a little character, don’t you? I bet your mom would have thought it looks better this way.”

Kurt smiles a little, considers the bunny.

“I know she’d be so proud of you, for how you are with Blaine,” Burt says honestly, pressing a kiss to the top of Kurt’s head. “Blaine needs a friend like you.”

“I think he’s my best friend,” Kurt says, voice sincere and Burt smiles.

“Why don’t we go out to him?”

Blaine’s still on the couch, his legs sticking out from where they can’t touch the floor, hands tucked under his knees. He perks up when he hears them, Kurt moving to sit beside him on the couch.

“I’m sorry I ruined your bunny,” Blaine says, voice timid.

“It’s okay, it’s not ruined,” Kurt answers, and Burt can see the way Blaine’s face starts to light up when he realizes Kurt isn’t mad at him. “I’m sorry I got mad at you.”

“It’s okay,” Blaine answers, blushing.

“Um,” Kurt starts, staring at the bunny in his hands, it’s pink ear flopped down. “I want you to have it.”

Burt blinks in surprise as Kurt presses the bunny to Blaine’s chest, Blaine’s arms wrapping around his cautiously.

“His name is Benjamin. My mommy gave him to me and he makes me feel better when I’m sad so maybe he’ll make you feel better when you’re sad?”

Blaine’s face is one of complete wonder as he clutches the stuffed animal too him, Burt’s heart swelling with pride at his son. His son who, at seven, is a better, kinder person than most adults he knows, and he knows Elizabeth would be so proud if she could see Kurt right now.

“Thanks,” Blaine says, voice in complete awe. Kurt smiles widely.

“Do you want to go listen to music in my room?” he asks and Blaine nods. Kurt jumps off the couch, taking Blaine’s hand in his to lead him down to his room.

Blaine clutches the bunny to his chest for the rest of the day.
