Well, that's that. I lost my job as a Fellow. My supervisors tried to work something out with the physical science professors I was working with, and it just didn't work. So, I'm still kinda relieved that it wasn't my fault. I'm very disappointed that this fell through, mostly for the sake of the Writing Center, since it seems they really needed me to test the new guidelines they just wrote. And for a couple of days, I was really anxious to see what was going to happen with my assistantship. Basically, though, I'm going to be a tutor again. They've been talking about putting me mostly with long-term students. I hope that'll work. That's going to be for eight hours, Monday and Wednesday. For the other ten hours, they want me to research more about adaptive technologies and tutoring students with disabilities. And you know, since I was already doing a project on that and it's kinda part of my dissertation research, that just works out great. I just need to find a way to factor in ten hours a week to dedicate to that stuff. I'm supposed to give a talk at a staff meeting in late November, and if I do it right, I'm sure I'll knock it out.
"Fringe" --oh my goodness! You know, I saw the promos, and I wanted to try it, see if I liked it. Wow! That got my "Heroes" fix good. It was just amazing, the cinemetography, the story, and most of the writing. It felt more like watching a movie than it did watching a TV show. Seriously, how many shows can you say that about? I still think "Heroes" is good, especially at characterization. At least in "Fringe," you don't have to simultaneously follow a ton of storylines at once. Part of me thinks they might have just been pulling out all the stops because it was the premiere. I hope not! I bet a lot of good things are to come.
The "Monk" season finale tonight was pretty cute. Nice to see Harold again. I often wondered about a Monk scenario involving hypnotism. I kinda wonder how much research they did on the topic. A lot of that knowledge seemed off for some reason. I don't know, though. There's so much about hypnotism I don't understand. Oh, and I've seen a double rainbow a few times before. Not that big, though. Wonder how they did that? It looked very real.
In my Brit Lit class, I got back my first quiz. Out of 10, I got a 12. So, I guess it's safe to say I'm off to a good start. The quiz I did for this week was a lot of fun. The Good Soldier, which we studied this week, was a rather interesting book, kinda odd though. Next week, we're studying A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I love that book!
I like the changes on "Dr. Phil," especially the theme song! I was so sick of that old theme song! It looks like there's going to be some interesting stuff coming on that show. Today, they were discussing the debate over a certain racial slur. You know, they didn't address the kinds of questions I have on this particular word. See, I was raised to not say anything unkind or offensive. So, I really don't understand why some people, like Dr. Phil, who usually see no problem filling their vocabulary with many crude or cruel words just flat-out refuse to say this word. Whatever happened to, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"? And what do these people do when they read, say Huckleberry Finn? I have to admit, the first time I came across this word was in literature, and I didn't know what it meant. I actually used it in an answer on a worksheet to this literature because it was the word in the literature, and I didn't know what it meant. I feel rather ashamed about it now. A few years later, my sophomore year in college, I was studying Huckleberry Finn, and the teacher, whenever he came to that word in a passage he was reading, would make a substitution. It felt a little . . . odd, especially since, again, there were other offensive words in some of these passages, and he wouldn't censor them. So . . . I don't know. Usually before I read something with offensive words, I start off with a disclaimer, like, "This passage includes words that are not normally in my terminology, and I do not condone them, but I have to read them because they're in the text." It's still hard.
Well, Facebook changed its format. I tried it when it was in beta, but the problem with it then is still the problem--what happened to all my applications? Some of my favorites just vanished.
