The Only Rule is Work

Sep 24, 2008 11:07

I've got a post brewing of miscellaneous thoughts and lessons I got from drawing a 500 page graphic novel over the summer, but first I saw a quote by Robert Pollard this morning that pretty much says it all:

Q. Speaking of Guided By Voices, what do you think the band’s legacy is?

A. Do it yourself, for yourself. Have fun. Make an impact. Inspire ( Read more... )

comics, gbv

The plan is SPX or bust. I probably won't have many copies there, but I'll have info for the web orders.

Anyway, this whole book is just a plot to get re-instated in the Daily Grind.

It's funny because all of what's going on now reminds me of your entry the other day about the super-anxiety until you hold an actual copy in your hands. I'm just terrified that I put all this work into a thing and the glue will be made of saliva or the paper will be tissue paper.

Also: Bullshit, This is! Etc.

Congrats Tom! I'm proud of you, son. Despite dropping out of Harvard Divinity, I think your mom & I might invite you to Thanksgiving dinner after all. Just don't catch the gay, that's all we ask.

Well, dad, I'm furiously scraping the Obama/Biden 08 sticker off my Prius so that we don't have to have our first fight right there in the driveway.

nice quote. i'll have to read the whole thing later.
and responding to your mention of lulu in an earlier comment, i've always thought that the only way lulu made sense for comics was around the 500 page range, in terms of price. i'll definitely be ordering one of these.

Yeah, Lulu seems a silly proposition for doing minicomic work, but repurposing them for making maxicomics feels delightful and inexpensive (relatively). I shopped around and it really was the best price with the best rep for this stuff.

This is awesome, today at work I internally debated whether I thought Pavement or GBV had the greater legacy, this is the clincher.

Also, last night I dreamt Phil Redmon jammed out with an amplified jungle-gym as his instrument. He was way out of my league.

I'm pumped about your 500 pages of whatever weird mix of academic egotists you serve up! :)
If you make it available, I will buy it, if it's less than $40.

The current price idea is a mere 25 American bones.

I would play twice that to see Phil Redmon and his Playpen Band play live.

The clincher for me has always been Pollard's "I'll just keep at it for fun" drive. It makes it seem like if we all just plunked around in the basement for a decade or so, eventually we'd all wind up with something like our own personal Propeller. Then it's full speed to Matador Records, you know?
