Maybe it's a little cute, but...are you sure about wearing it? [She's pretty sure she knows the answer, though, from previous examples of Shirley hats.]

I wouldn't be interested in it if I didn't want to wear it... [But, Fenimore. It's pink. And has butterflies on it...]

But it's.... [How to describe what is off about that hat so that Shirley might understand...? Those butterflies....] There's rather a lot of it.

Yes. Isn't it nice? I don't have any hats with butterflies on them...

[Sh-shirley, why do you have to be so cute about it? It makes it harder to bring down the fashion judgment.] I think it's a few too many butterflies for one hat, especially a small one.

... really? [She looks... genuinely puzzled. She was not aware that it was possible for there to be such a thing as "too many butterflies for one hat."]

...Well, maybe a little.... [But not very much.]

I suppose I would need to find some glue, if I wanted to do that... I don't think I could sew them on very well... [ponder ponder ponder...]

I guess that might work.... [Wait, she couldn't let herself get caught up in this flow!] But it would work better if you just took a few of them off of it.

... ... really? [She makes a thoughtful noise, considering this train of thought.] But the butterflies are what I really like about it...

The butterflies are pretty, but it's just too many on one hat.

Oh... ... well, I suppose so...

[She almost feels bad for crushing Shirley's dreams of fashion, but she's not going to learn if she gives in now. Instead, she puts a hand on Shirley's head, like a non-repeated headpat, even though she has to reach up fairly high since they're pretty much the same height.]

It'll still be pretty when it's just one. ...Or two. [Even though just one would probably be better.]

[Shirley seems soothed by the touch; she's a little disappointed to hear that the butterflies are a bit "too much," but at the same time is reassured that it's salvageable.]
