Finding the shit to give and the upswing

Ok so...yesterday was so shiteous I don't have words.

My students in my AP class (like an IB but in my opinion less useful) are so lazy- it defies imagination. My other 4 classes don't have this problem. We have altered the format to be more accessable, shifted to daily portfolio work...in my 7 years teaching I have never had an issue this bad.

Their grades on the last test were abysmal. It is clear to me the work simply isn't being done. Their grades reflect this. I am depressed and at a loss for how to fix this.
I am debating resorting to "points" on the their tests (one per period) for the quality and calibre of their involvement in discussion. I detest this- but maybe it will work.

Today however was much better. I had my last untenured observation and words like: Tremendous growth, excellence, reflective, receptive, precise were used. I do hope I get the "welcome back for 2008-2009 letter". So I suppose I cant suck that badly - I work in a great district so if I blew I would be out the door. The whole AP thing is very discouraging.
