God watched them as they made love.
Beneath the sky and stars, he watched them grunt and moan. He saw the dirt under them shift, and get stuck to their sweaty bodies.
"Its a shame really" he said "They make a good couple"
God dons his favorite Brooks Brothers suit and walks up to them.
They moan in unison.Their breath is visible in the cold winter air.
"Excuse me sir, ma'am?"
They scream obscenities and passion into the air.
The words of their screams form an arc, fall softly on the ground.
"Sir?"
I love you she says to him. His body responds to her words.
Their dancing for the stars, and the worlds unseen.
"SIR!"
And they stop then, the echoes of their moans and gods words get tangled in each other.
"I'm sorry sir, but there's been a clerical error"
"What kind of error?"
"The two of you aren't supposed to be soul mates, there was a mix up in Delivery, and you got the wrong soul"
He nods slowly, the man, what can you say to this?
He stands up, his body shining from the sweat and grime.
"I'm sorry" he says to the girl,"Apparently there's been a mix up, I don't love you."
"I understand" she says.
"Now if you would come with me, we'll get this all sorted out"
The man nods, and takes gods hand, and they both vanish.
They were never there.
The girl lies back in the grass, and feels the remembered heat of their sex, it rises out of the grass like dew on a rainy morning.
The grass cries silently, it will miss the warmth and the play of tangled limbs and words that had kept them company.
She hears this cry. It resonates within her.
"Its a shame" she whispers to the grass.
"We made a good couple"
The stars drink in the last of her words. And then she too is gone.
She was never there.
