The One About My Rajshri Obsession

Oct 24, 2008 21:02

Most people who know me and know the choices and opinions that I have, would find it hard to believe that I am perhaps the biggest Rajshri films fans around today. I can watch both Vivah and Hum Saath Saath Hai ten times a day and not be bored or feel unproductive.

I spent a fortune trying to locate the 2DVD Collectors Edition set of Hum Saath Saath Hai and it finally arrived last week and since then I think I have seen it 3 times. Its just one of those movies that has so much sincerity, so much love and devotion packed into it that you just have this huge foolish smile throughout the duration. Such style of film-making is something so rare because Indian cinema is home to some of the most pretencious, self fish and un-dedicated makers of our time who are simply there to make a few headlines, and score a couple of million bucks.

HSSH has perfection in every corner of it. From the costumes of each character that reflect their characterisation flawlessly. Preety who is shy and quiet is always seen with a loose hair style and light shades. Sapna who is strong, energetic and youthful endorses outfits that are "today"s working girls outfit. Sadhana who is mature and strong minded is also made to reflect her nature. Whats more amazing is that the movie has three stunning actresses who blow you away each scene with their outfits and NONE have them wearing a sari that has a bikini shaped blouse that maximises exposure. When you see the songs you can't help but simply wish you saw more such outfits in today's movies.

As for Vivah the character development of Prem and Poonam is what makes the movie so amazing. The subtle at the time but drastic over the time changes that you witness as they grow into the relationship is just genius. The depths of both characters is never ending and you the highest potential of each is not revealed till the very climax.

Many have put forward the argument that both movies are too unrealistic and almost fairy tales but I'd like to put forward the argument that both movies claim to tell the story of extraordinary families. In HSSH everyone around the family thinks "How does Ram Kishan manage to keep his extended family together in today's day and age" this acknowledged that the family setting that is so perfect of all three brothers, parents, future bahus etc is something rarely achieved. So it can't be said that its a fairy tale, it in fact says that its not common for people to find such families these days but there are a few rare ones who are trying with all their might to hold onto this close knit setting.

The same argument goes for Vivah. Many have said to me that marriage is not that simple, enjoyable and smooth. But one forgets the climax in which Alok Nath's character says "the moment each son's father becomes like you, no daughter's father will feel burdened by the responsibility of attaining a respectable family for his daughter" thus statement acknowledged that no, relationships, new bonds aren't smooth but the movie is about this one specific family who did have it perfect and why. Once again if someone says that this movie is unrealistic and the scenario is I will say, yes it is and thats the purpose of the movie, they even acknowledge it. Its a story of amazing people who are rare finds.

Well I think thats all that was brewing in my head that I had to get out for now haha...
