Godmen, idiots, and buried treasures.

Godman is as dirty a word as politician, in India...

It is a lucrative business after all. Little or no investment and a lifetime of opulence. No work (apart from talking rubbish) and all pay.

Once a friend asked, "What's wrong if people want to be duped/brainwashed and you take advantage of that?" I have no answer to that.

The point raised by your friend has a flaw: the people in question are simply dumb and under-informed. They most certainly have no desire to be duped or brainwashed. It's like smoking: people know that smoking is harmful and may even lead to cancer, but they do it anyway, not because they want to get harmed or contract cancer; It's just that the implied threat seems faraway and more importantly, it only seems to happen to 'others'.
