LJ sure is quiet these days. :-) I wonder if people are out enjoying the last scraps of summer? Over here, the leaves are already falling and cool winds are blowing, so my thoughts have turned to warm shawls and cups of steaming tea.

Anyway, yesterday I watched one of the movies I bought for my summer holidays and never got around to watching: The New World, a movie based on the story of Pocahontas:

I know very little of American history or the Native Americans, but I thought this was a beautiful movie. It's very artsy and poetic, which I notice has led quite a few people to calling it boring. I'm usually not fond of artsy movies myself either --just tell me a vibrant, good story, not how green the chair is-- but this was an exception. It was very lush and beautiful, a feast for the senses. I realise this movie took liberties with actual history, but it worked out, at least for me. I cried like a river at the end, too. :-)

Inspired by this movie, I grabbed Dances with Wolves, which has been lying on my shelf ever since I bought it from a sale months ago. How different it was; I stopped watching at approximately fifteen minutes. I had no idea what was going on, and I didn't understand what half of the characters were saying. Also, ever since I learned that Kevin Costner was behind the cutting of most of Alan Rickman's brilliant scenes as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, possibly because he was worried Alan would steal the show, I haven't much cared for him (obviously, Alan still stole the movie even with what little screen time he had). Costner is a wooden actor, imo, and I can never forget it's him; he's basically playing variations of Kevin Costner in every movie he's in. That said, I highly recommend the special extended edition of Robin Hood; it has all of those juicy Alan scenes Kevin cut from the original release. I just love Alan as Nottingham. :-)
