okay, so getting in the van today at 6:20 and it was already 83 degrees had me wishing it was fall. This type of weather makes me grumpy as all get out, sleepy and lazy. so what helps cheer me up?
thinking of fall. Boy do I love going on rides and finding pumpkins. I like tall pumpkins, short pumpkins. Pumpkins that lean heavily to one side and Pumpkins with warts on them.
I love fall displays with bales of straw and mums of yellow, purple and white tucked here and there with little squash and gourds hiding in the nooks and crannies.
Apples thrill me most of all. Don't show me any red delicious. Red delicious apples are the "AOL's of the apple world". I want Stayman Winesaps, Gingergolds, Pink Lady's, Yellow Transparents and gingercrisps. I'm an apple snob and living in the MarVaPa (yes I made that up) area lets me indulge that snobbery.
I love taking walks in the fall. I love having orange and gold and red leaves falling through the air and floating down streams. I love the leaves that get stuck in whirlpools, all the colors combining into a pretty pool of gold. Walking in Patapsco you can see the beautiful bittersweet and follow its impossible climb up trees and telephone poles.
Getting up to Amish country in September before all the New Jersey and New Yorkers realize that it is beautiful there. the peace and slowness of watching the Amish harvest their fields helps to connect you back to the seasons, you can feel your breathing slow, your body relax.
finding little accents to add to my Halloween/harvest decorations makes me very happy. I love to pull out my storage totes and place ghosts, corn and pumpkins all over my house. I don't know anyone who can decorate a house for Halloween quite like I can.
I even love the space of time between Halloween and Thanksgiving. It is a very slow time, harvest is over and you can relax before the Christmas season has you rushing all over the place.
Camping of course is great this time of year. you can pile on the blankets and wear socks to bed. You can sit around a fire and not sweat to death.
One of my most favorite things of all is being able to open my windows. I truly love feeling the breeze in my house, the smell of the air and the land. I love to be in bed at night and feel the slightly chilly air filling up the room and making you snuggle deeper under the covers.
I love to take walks around my neighborhood at night and look at everyone's Haloween lights. There is something I love about the oranges and purples. I'd take that over red, green and white any day! I love smiling Jac-O-Lantern's, witches flying on brooms, cats with their backs up against the moon.
I love the fall days when we get the the leftovers of tropical storms and we get a weekend full of rain. these weekends are best spent drinking coffee and tea on the couch watching cozy movies and watching the rain hit your house. Is there anything more special than watching the rain hit your windows and knowing that you paid for those windows and because of your hard work you are nice and cozy and safe from the storm?
I hope you've enjoyed this ode to fall
