I have calculated how much money I have spent on my house since 2005.
2005 was a very big year since we replaced all of the appliances except the dishwasher. We splurged for the highest efficiency furnace, replaced the driveway, and put covered gutters on the roof.
People talk about home ownership as if it's a money maker. That is not really the case. Yes, there is a tax savings and the *potential* to grow equity (ha! not these days), but all in all, it's still expensive.
These expenses are major initiatives as well as standard upkeep. This doesn't include any purchases that would be packed up and moved if we sold the house (i.e. storage boxes, decorations).
Year Total Spent
2005 $24,583
2006 $6,606
2007 $7,316
2008 $2,749
2009 $2,892
Total $44,146
Average per month $849
