So this week I finally found the gusto to get off the futon and into the hardware store. Why, you ask? I won't bore everyone with the dull how and why and get right down to what's happened in three nights.
- Painted the back wall of the dining room/area to tie the "great room" together
- Moved the computer/desk/office stuff into the "lab" (former bedroom)
- Painted one wall of the lab in an "Antique Red" - second and final accent wall is tonight
- Acquired high-density fiberboard backings for my decrepit MDF shelving units. Glued the back onto one and it's already 50% stronger than the cardboard backing that comes with them. The nails will have to be done during daylight hours
- Salvaged a sizable cheap mirror from the basement "mongo" area. The frame was this hideous mottled horn faux wood finish stuff, so I hit it with some gloss black spraypaint. Good as new.
This has allowed me to do some practical, as well as some "homey" things with my space:
- The storage units in the kitchen will dissapear, as now the buffet and china cabinets can be used for storing appliances and stuff. This will drastically reduce clutter in the kitchen.
- The electronics and boneyard scraps can now dissapear into the lab, freeing up space in the china cabinet and the buffet.
- The dining-room table now gets to sit in the middle of the dining room, leaving ample room for chairs and guests!
- The TV area now gets a ton more space, now that the buffet isn't hogging the window area.
Overall, I've managed to do this on a rather minimal home improvement budget. That's going to change since I'm on the lookout for a large cedar/blanket chest (queen-size wide) and possibly a small couch or two. If anyone sees something available for thrift, please let me know!
