writerinadrawer The first time Ianto was ever in the field with Torchwood Three was the first time he saw them stop the rain cold in its tracks. It was one of those downpours that you'd just hope would stop eventually before you had to learn to row a boat to get where you were going. Ianto, of course, had remembered to bring an umbrella, though he was a bit surprised that no one else had bothered to. They all just walked out of the SUV and headed to the scene of the crime.
"Torchwood," Jack said briefly, not bothering to even slow his pace as one of the officers questioned his presence. Suzie was running behind, the package carefully wrapped to keep it away from prying eyes. Ianto watched as she got stopped and he continued to watch as she tried to get past the officer, who clearly wasn't convinced that she was who she said she was. Before Jack managed to intervene - but not before Owen had put in a complaint about the weather - she whispered something in his ear and he stared at her before letting her through.
Ianto was confused at her next words, "I probably didn't even say that right." He didn't know what she meant, but it made Jack look at her sharply. Suzie tilted her chin up. "And I really don't give a damn." Whatever Jack's reply might have been was cut off by a loud complaint by Owen.
"Can we just get this over with? I wasn't expecting to be wet for long."
"Ianto," Jack said, turning to him. "Do you have the stopwatch?"
Ianto pulled it out of his pocket and showed it to Jack. "Right here, sir."
Jack nodded. "Good." He turned to Suzie and nodded. "Do your thing."
Ianto waited until the gasp before hitting the timer on the stopwatch. He was so focused on seeing the dead come back to life that it took him a few moments to realize it wasn't raining. He could hear the surprised chatter of the people around them, but no one in his team seemed at all surprised. After the man's final breath - he hadn't seen who'd killed him and didn't really know anything useful - Ianto clicked the stopwatch again. Suddenly, the rain was back, beating down on them as if it had never stopped.
"How long?" Jack asked, eyes trained on Suzie as she wrapped the gauntlet back up.
Ianto checked the watch. "One minute forty, sir. It's a new record."
Jack just nodded. "Let's get out of this rain."
They moved back to the SUV as one, though Ianto saw Jack hesitate, talking to the officer briefly. He didn't take more than a few moments, however, and caught back up with them before they were at the car.
"Let's go home," he said, eyes lingering on Suzie. Ianto wasn't sure if it was the rain, the words, or the look, but he felt a shiver run through him and got in the car quickly. Home indeed.
