Flight lesson 2 and 3 Completed!

Apr 04, 2010 21:30

Well, lesson 2 was fun, but not much in the way of instruction. Do to poor planning, we didn't get off the ground til around 8:00 PM or so and it was already getting dark. When flying an airplane, the ability to see the horizon is critical. So, even though the visibilty was pretty good, with the sun behind some dark clouds, the horizon was pretty obscured by the time we reached our cruising altitude. We basically fly out to the trainning area and then turned around and went back. It was almost completely dark by the time we landed the airplane.

Lesson 3 went much better. You know, it's harder to taxi an airplane then it is to fly it in straight and level flight! But, I'm getting the hang of it now, and Bruce didn't have to help me at all as we went to the engine run up area.

This evening, we practiced basic turns, climbs and descents. To me, it looked like I was zooming all over the place, though Bruce didn't think I was doing too badly. I suspect that I'm beginning to catch up with all that's going on, so the flaws in my flying are more clearly apparent.

Things to remember.

Get the airplane at the altitude and cruise speed you want, then play with the trim wheel.
Don't focus on any one aspect of the airplane for more then a couple of seconds. Eye's outside the airplane, check airspeed, altimeter then back outside the airplane. Make sure to clear the airspace before manuveuring.

My next flight is Wednesday, we are going to play with minimum controllable airspeed!
