WICKED
I just came back from seeing Wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I'll do the run down by character (it's easier like that).
Elphaba (Stephanie J. Block)- Here's the deal with her. I liked her. I really did. She was a great actress and she certainly did my favorite song "No Good Deed" justice. But she's not Idina Menzel. She used her upper range far more than I think she should have, particularly in "The Wizard and I." I normally LOVE that song but I really didn't like her interpretation. Instead of belting, she sang her lines in quick gasps. And holding the last line? I could have done better. But all in all, she was good.
Glinda (Emily Rozek)- Funny story. Glinda was SUPPOSED to be Kendra Kassebaum. Oh no. We get the UNDERSTUDY. So I see the little piece of paper and I start FREAKING OUT. Because, if Glinda sucks, the show is RUINED. RUINED I TELL YOU. BUt anyway, I really, really liked her. She can't hold her notes like Kristen Chenoweth, but her range was excellent, and she did beautifully on the high notes. I actually got shivers during the end of "Thank Goodness."
And then we come to...Fiyero.
OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD. GET SOMEONE WHO CAN ACTUALLY HOLD A FUCKING NOTE FOR LONGER THAN TWO SECONDS BEFORE DROPPING IN PITCH TO PLAY THE MAN GUY ROLE. PLEASE DEAR GOD. I was so angry at how he fucked up his ONLY TWO SONGS that I almost strangled Jordy.
But everything technical was AMAZING. THe lights, the sound (although I think Elphie and Glinda's mics went out for a little in "One Short Day") and especially the sets and costumes were beyond gorgeous. Especially to someone who's used to seeing high school shows.
