12 Spoilerific Reasons to Love 'Once Upon A Time'

Feb 26, 2013 16:47

Since I seem incapable of writing any sort of fiction at the moment, I thought I'd try my hand at meta.

Thus I proudly present...

1. It's a series carried by female protagonists without the drama that usually involves. That means instead of 'he loves me, he loves me not', there is 'let's find out if that guy really loves me and if not, I'll crush his heart to dust'. Action. I like that.

2. Fairy tales. In a good way. Media has been swamped with all sorts of fairy tale adaptations lately and they've been putting my love for the genre to the test. This one? Is perfect.

3. The characters. I hate some and I love some but I can honestly say that I am not indifferent about a single character in that series. Kudos. And more kudos for Rumplestiltskin. Because he's the best.

4. Henry. He spends an entire year running around playing prophet to the nonbelievers and he doesn't falter once. That kid's made of steel.

5. In the season finale, Emma mirrors her father's fight against the dragon, with his sword-throw from the pilot as a grand finale. Forget Father to Son. Father to Daughter is how we roll.

6. The trees. Have you been paying attention? There are trees everywhere in Storybrooke and I keep finding more. Wallpapers in the Mayor's office, Henry's classroom, Granny's diner. A tree sculpture on Mary Margret's bedroom wall, a tree pendant on Regina's neck, in pictures, in posters, on walls. They're everywhere.

7. Little Red Riding Hood is the Big Bad Wolf. Talk about taking back the power.

8. Charming and Snow take turns rescuing each other. Tit for tat and he's the one that consistently gets himself into more trouble than her. She gets threatened by trolls? He gets kidnapped. She gets forget-my-love-potioned? He gets kidnapped. Also, in Storybrooke, he's kind of a clueless dick that dicks around a lot. And she's the one that calls the shots.

9. And can we please talk about Snow White and Mary Margret? Even when she's a cutesy primary school teacher she kicks ass and takes names. She should be a pushover, but she knows what she wants and she holds her head up high.

10. Children. It's not really about romance. It's about familial love. It's about children. Reason Snow and Charming find each other in the end? Rumple gets them together because he wants their child. Reason Rumple creates the curse? Bae. Reason Emma comes to Storybrooke? Henry. Reason Jefferson goes nuts? Grace. Reason Regina turns the bitch up? Henry. Reason Regina has an inner bitch to begin with? Her mother. Reason she's not a total monster? Her father. It's all about parents and children and that just makes me feel fuzzy inside.

11.The 'credits'. Have you noticed that there's a new fairy tale creature in the forest every time, and it always matches the episode somehow?

12.Sebastian Stan as the Mad Hatter.

... Okay, I'm done now.
