Yeah. Right now. I'm just really worried right now.
If no one finds her alive, I'll be not okay for a little while, but she was is is one of my best friends. She helped me with that Christmas present I got you on our first Christmas Eve together, and we used to talk about how being an angel isn't what we thought it would be and she- we promised each other that if we ever needed each other we'd be there and we had a really real conversation together about questioning all this angel stuff. I'm just
If she's gone, I'm really going to miss her a lot and I'm going to hate it if we never find anything, cause you don't know if she died or if she fell through a Rift or if she was kidnapped. I understand endings are as much a part of life as beginnings. It's not knowing that's What if she's hurt or scared or
I don't know.
I think you're the only person that I knew a year ago that's still around.
I've got my best men on it right now. If she's here, they'll find something, okay?
I promise you there will be something. [It might not be good but... he feels it's better at least that she know somethign conclusively.]
I know. There are a lot of people I've never seen again. Some that have died along the way. It's how the city works. I know it's no real comfort to hear that, but I don't think that's something that will change.
Part of Josef knows that isn't realistic. What's realistic is one of Elizabeth's best friends is missing, and he does not have any good news to give her once the day has ended.
He steps into their apartment and goes looking for her. His chest constricts when he sees her. The last time he saw her by the window--]
Hey.
[The keys get tossed onto the table as he makes his way over to her.]
[He knows what that smile means, and he always gives it back to her. Hi, I'm sorry and I love you and I'm here. It looks so simple, and it feels so simple sometimes.
Even when it's anything but. His arms wrap tightly around her waist and draw her to him so that she's pressed up against his chest. Safe there.]
Knowing you, you didn't stop until you nearly dropped.
[He doesn't blame her for it. It's who she is. She's a great friend. He pushes the hair back from her face and presses a kiss to the top of her forehead.]
[Elizabeth rests against his chest, breathing in and out and closing her eyes.
It does feel safe here. Safe and warm and... soft. Isn't that what she said when he held her during the plagues too? She almost fell asleep in his arms while they were standing on the sidewalk.]
I couldn't.
I kept thinking I'd turn the corner and find her or if I went a little more, maybe...
[He's just going to hold on tighter. He can feel the exhaustion and the sadness pouring off of her in waves, and he wants to relieve some of that, even if it's just a little bit.
Josef keeps his chin tucked against the top of her head, arms wrapping around her waist further and pulling her closer.]
I've got as many people as I know on it.
They're supposed to call at the first sign of her, or the first sign of someone having last seen her. ... I'm sorry, Elizabeth.
[And he is. He can only ever empathize when it's her pain.]
[He'd still want to do more. He logically knows his presence alone helps, but he wants to do more. He wants to find her friend. He wants to take away the sadness, fix it somehow, while knowing that there isn't much that will help.
Josef knows Phoebe is gone. He half-knows Elizabeth knows it, too.]
I don't... know if there's anything else I can do, but if there is, I'd want to do it.
[Whether there is or not, he has to say it, because she looks like--]
You should still eat, Elizabeth.
While we wait for news, I can whip us up something light? [He place another kiss on her cheek and shakes his head at the mention of her hair. His shirt is getting a bit wet, but--]
[Elizabeth knows. A part of her knew before she started looking, but she's not used to not hoping first, to not exuding every possibility before she settles on the most painful one.]
You're doing everything already. You've got your people looking for her, and you're... here with me. I can't think of anything else I could need right now.
[She looks up at him and smiles, nodding, forehead resting against him for a moment before she pulls away so they can go into the kitchen.]
I know. I like when you whip stuff up so that'd be nice. Yes.
[And she smiles again, tiredly but still a smile.] You never do mind. Tears or pancake batter or icing or... shower... water.
[There's hope and then there's denial. Josef has admittedly never had experience with either, but he can understand her accepting a truth when there's no hope for something. There's hope in something you can change and hope in something you literally can't.]
Okay. Like I said, they're good trackers. If she's here, in the city, or hell, in the country, they'll find her. There's a forty-eight hour window that's critical to finding a missing person.
[And she could be a missing person. But the likelihood of it is slim to none. They know that, too.]
Then that's what I'll do. Mac and cheese sound good?
[He pushes her hair back over her shoulders and gives her a slight smile.] Well, I don't mind them when it's you.
I know they will. Your people are good at what they do.
[Elizabeth smiles again at him through that sadness, and she nods.]
Mac and cheese sounds perfect.
[Her hand rests against his hand when it brushes against her shoulders to push her hair back before she leans up to kiss him.
And she walks over to a seat by the counter, putting her hands against the top of it and resting her head on top of her hands. She'll eat and then sleep, and think about the rest tomorrow, grieve or celebrate tomorrow. Whatever news comes.]
[The smile isn't enough to make him feel better, since she's still hurting, but it's enough the concern fades a little. He leads her over to the kitchen and leans down to press a kiss to the top of her head.
Josef busies himself with making them their quick dinner while she rests her head on her heads. It's hard not to go over to her once again, but he reminds himself he wants her to eat before she sleeps.
And she's so tired from all the searching she's out like a light once he leads her back to the bedroom. Josef doesn't sleep, but he holds her all night, and once it's morning he's up. The phone rings and he has a conversation with one of his trackers.
Leaning against the door frame, he watches her sleep, waiting for her to wake up. Hoping she keeps sleeping for a little while longer.]
[A brief moment of hesitation.]
Are you okay?

Hi. [She wrings her hair out more and then when he gets close enough, she'll wrap her arms tightly around him, resting her face against his chest.]
I was looking for a long time. I was all sweaty, needed the shower like you wouldn't believe.
