Ever since he met Baekhyun, Chanyeol has been happy. He doesn’t regret making the loud boy his best friend and lover.
A lot of people disagree with him, since Chanyeol was loud enough on his own; nobody needed his apparent other half to increase the volume. Widely known as the jokesters in the Ark, everybody liked to stay clear of them. Chanyeol once overheard his and Baekhyun's parents talking about how they were worried for their future. According to them, if they kept taking everything as a joke, they would end up getting floated. Chanyeol now looks back at the conversation with mixed feelings.
They’re adults now, that much is clear, and were still alive. That alone makes him feel proud. They’ve proven their parents wrong, just like they promised, but that all seems very irrelevant now that the news of the failure of the life-support system have been revealed. Basically the Ark is dying and soon there would be no oxygen to breathe.
In school, Chanyeol remembers being taught about the Ground and how a hundred years ago, a grave nuclear war made it impossible to live on the so called “Earth”. He had dreamt about it, everyone has. About being able to touch the ground, see the tale-like green forest like in the pictures and breathe real air. Life in space was all he knew and those were all just dreams. He never ever thought about the Ark failing them, but, oh, he should’ve. A giant piece of metal carrying around 2.400 people now sounded like something too good to be true. And it is.
He was fairly young, being only in his twenties. The concept of death, despite being very present in the Ark, never occurred to him. He has always been very careful to not get floated. It wasn’t an easy thing to forget that any crime, no matter what, is punishable by death. The fact that it all didn’t matter anymore is the only thing in his mind at the moment.
‘It doesn’t matter. Nothing does.’ He thought. ‘Nothing but Baekhyun’s safety.’
It was always Baekhyun. From the first hi, to the most soft caress. Baekhyun. His Baekhyun.
‘Stop panicking and think. How can you save him?’ He lets out a frustrated breath out as he rubbs his eyes. He leans against the wall, his gaze on the boy sleeping on the bed. After hearing the disturbing news, they had both made their way to their room in silence. Chanyeol took pride in knowing what was going through his lover’s mind, but, for the life of him, he couldn’t come up with a single idea this time. The smaller had kissed him good night quietly and went to sleep immediately, whereas Chanyeol hadn’t slept a wink.
He knew what was going on outside, for the quiet in the room let him hear the people passing through the halls. In order to give the Ark more time, they were going to have to eliminate a group of people to lessen the amount of oxygen used. Chanyeol guessed that was the reason the Chancellor hadn’t communicated the news yet until now.
He closes his eyes. He knows what he has to do. If it’s something he could do for Baekhyun’s life, he would gladly do it. This decision doesn’t guarantee his lover’s safety, because the failure in the system would still exist, but it would give him time and that’s all the taller needs. Have the universe relish Baekhyun’s perfect being longer.
He bits his lip and shifts his weight from one foot to the other. Fear and uncertainty gripps his body and he finds it hard to move a muscle.
‘Time’s running out. You need to hurry.’
He leans over Baekhyun’s body, moves some of the hair out of the beautiful face and kissed his forehead.
“Channie?” Baekhyun murmurs. His eyes flutter open and he frowns. “You’re still dressed?” He makes a move to get up but is stopped by the taller. “What’s wrong?”
Chanyeol sighs. Lying is something he has never done to the love of his life, and having him awake and looking at him makes things harder. He gulps. “Nothing’s wrong, baby. I just got a call from the workers, there’s an emergency of some sort. I’ll be right back, okay?”
Baekhyun doesn’t look convinced, and it is obvious he knew the latter was lying but he nodds with a frown anyways. “You promise?”
It is a habit of theirs to promise to come back. It started years ago when Chanyeol had an accident at work that scared Baekhyun much more than necessary.
Chanyeol smiles with difficulty. “I Promise.”
.
“I’m here to volunteer for Section 17, sir.”
.
“Chanyeol, wake up! I made breakfast!”
He frowns a little at the yelling but gets up anyways. Taking a deep breath, he walks to the bathroom loudly, so the other can hear him. He looks at himself in the mirror.
‘This won’t do. He’ll know something’s wrong.’
He practices making convincing smiles until he hears knocking - or slams, really, Baekhyun doesn’t knock.
“Yah! What the hell, Yeol? Did you die in the toilet or what?”
The question affects him more than it should. He forces himself to smile and opens the door.
There he is. The most beautiful person he has ever met. His hair has been done already (“The end of this stupid piece of metal will not ruin my beautiful hair, got it?”) and he is wearing simple clothing. He is looking at the taller with a scowl, annoyed.
“What? A guy can’t take a dump?”
The smaller of the two answers with a scoff.
.
“So..”
“Yeah?” Baekhyun said, looking up from his book.
“I’m going to work now.” The taller announces in a strained voice that has the latter raising an eyebrow from where he sat looking at the giant standing in the middle of the room awkwardly.
“Okay..? Don’t forget to buy some drinks on your way back, by the way.”
Silence. Chanyeol lets out a groan and almost runs to the other. He takes him in his arms and buries his face in the hair he loves so much.
“Chan-“
“I love you. Remember that. I love you so much, every single thing I do is for you, you know that right?”
“Chan-“
“All I do is for you. Please, never ever forget that. I love you. I’m so sorry.”
“What-“
Lips stop all the words Baekhyun is trying to say. He closes his eyes and melts into the kiss, his chest suddenly tight. He kisses the giant back with the same force the other is kissing him until Chanyeol pulls back slowly. He rests his forehead against his lover’s and stares into his eyes. Beakhyun could see love in them, but he could also see fear and it makes his heart clench.
Chayeol suddenly steps away and smiles. It looks forced and makes Baekhyun feel worse. “I’ll try to remember those drinks.”
“Why are being like th-“
“I’m running late, Baek. Love you!” With that and a lump in his throat, he leaves the room.
“Wait! Chanyeol!” He runs to the door but the giant is already down the hall, out of sight.
“Promise you’ll come back…” Baekhyun whispers, but is met with silence.
.
“We want you to know that the Ark and its people will always remember you as heroes. We are thankful for your sacrifice.”
The sound of the door shutting resonates through the room.
Chanyeol hears the familiar whirring of the machines providing oxygen into the room slowly come to a stop.
The last thing in his mind before he closes his eyes is Baekhyun and his radiant laughter.
.
.
.
Baekhyun hears screams and runs out to find what’s wrong. His nerves are driving him crazy. Chanyeol hasn’t come back from work and the morning’s events are clear in his mind. He runs and runs until he finds a bunch of people surrounding something.
“In order to give the Ark more time, these brave men and women have willingly given their life. These will all be remembered as heroes….”
He hears nothing more. Doesn’t need to.
He pushes everyone out of the way and is met by the sight of too many bodies lying on the ground, but that doesn’t register in his brain. Because the only thing he can see is one of them.
The small man doesn’t realize he is screaming and making his way to the body until he was holding the cold body in his arms. Tears were running down his face as he cradled his precious Chanyeol’s body.
“No. NO!” He couldn’t breathe. “Channie…Channie…Baby…wake up! Wake up! No! You can’t do this to me. No. You idiot. No. You can’t leave me. You promised…”
‘But he didn’t. Not this time.’ He sobs more at the thought.
He dully notes people holding him back and he kicks and screams more.
This isn’t happening.
“Put him to sleep. He’s panicking too much.” He hears a muffled voice say from somewhere behind him.
No. He struggles against the people holding him down more. He didn’t want to sleep. He has to be there for when Channie wakes up. Channie…Channie….His love.
“All I do is for you. “ Chanyeol’s voice is all he hears in his head as he starts to feel a sudden numbness spreading in his body and makes his eyes close against his will.
