It was the waiting and it was going to be the death of her. Addison Montgomery was a world renown fetal and neonatal surgeon; having patients fly in from all around the world seeking her help in seemingly hopeless cases. She was used to living in the fast lane and sometimes having to hang on the edge of her seat waiting to see what an outcome of one of her miracle surgeries would be. Yet it had never occurred to Addison just how nerve wrecking it actually was when the tables were turned. Her assumptions had been way off. She was a damn good doctor and yet even that didn’t prepare her for what she was going through. Waiting; what was going to be the downfall of the great Dr. Addison Montgomery.

A sigh escaped Addison’s lips as she spun on her heels and made her way back across the room. Her feet retracing steps she had been taking for the last three minutes. Yet those three minutes seemed like an eternity to the pacing doctor. Reaching the wall and not being able to go any further, Addison briefly glared at the clock on the wall before she spun around once more and made the return journey.

“Addison!”

The exasperated cry caused Addison to come to an abrupt halt. Her head snapped in the direction of the voice and for the first time in three minutes she remembered that she was not alone. Sitting on her bed was Amelia Shepherd.

“You’re making me dizzy,” Amelia complained.

“I’m sorry,” Addison muttered, “I’m just so nervous.”

“I know,” Amelia sighed. “But everything will be okay.”

“You don’t know that,” Addison snapped.

Addison immediately regretted the words as the spilled out of her mouth. She knew that Amelia was only trying to help, but her nerves were getting the best of her. She realized exactly what her patients family felt when she couldn’t give them anything more than a “we have to wait.”

Amelia quickly rose to her feet and crossed the room to where Addison still stood. She squared her shoulders and looked Addison straight in the eye.

“You don’t know it’s going to go bad either.”

It seemed like time froze for just a moment. The two women remained where they stood, not wanting to be the one to back down. Each held their opinion and neither wanting to relinquish to the other. It took what seemed forever before Addison finally nodded slowly and lowered her eyes to the ground.

“You’re right.”

Ding!

Those seemed to be the magic words, for in the background a small bell went off causing with women to jump out of their skin. Addison shared a glance with her companion before they both took off for the bathroom adjoined to her bedroom. Addison was the first to reach the sink and a smile broke out against her lips when she saw what was waiting. She quickly pulled her cell phone as she moved aside for Amelia to take a look as well. She dialed the number she knew all too well.

It was if Sam was psychic because he seemed to pick up on the first ring. Addison did not give him the opportunity to say anything. She was way too excited for normal formalities.

“I’m pregnant.”
