I'm not sure, but I think the telomere shortening concerns ended up being a dead end. They found that there is a process which actually adds buffer DNA back. The only catch is that this process only seems to be active during the early stages of differentiation.

I'd also question the validity of the problem in the first place. If the condition were really a problem it would never have reached the epidemic state within the species.
