Update on things

May 17, 2007 23:17

So, it's been a bit and I thought I might update people on things.

First, the semester is over, and I got all A's again, maintaining the 4.0 GPA. Somehow I know I am going to mess it up. The other issue is the only one who really cares is me anyway. It's not going to help me get a job or make me a better person. However, I want it, so I will keep working for it.

Work life.
Yeah, well. Work has been interesting. I have done several interesting things for NetSource, however, that's all coming to an end on 6/1/07. I decided I couldn't run the company while my parents still owned it, and they weren't going to just give it to me. A rather heated discussion between my father and I cemented the deal, and I will depart NetSource when the kids school is over.

So many miscommunications and missteps along the way led to this, but oh well. In 3 months, we can all pretend like it never happened and go back to our passive aggressive interactions that so please Susan. Some people can work with their parents, and maybe even I could have if I didn't simultaneously live with them. I regret the lost opportunity for a guaranteed job doing exactly what I want to be doing, however, in the end, it wouldn't have been as ideal as I wanted cause they would have never let it go, and I would always answer to them. The way I would run the company would be so very different that we would butt heads constantly.

So instead, I am taking the next year off work and going to school and spending more time with the kids.  Hooray!

Oh well, so much for rambling about work.

School Life

School is going great in addition to the grades for which I am so proud.  One of my classes was extremely interesting.  Entrepreneurship and Innovation.  In this class, we had to construct a business plan and feasability study for a new business.  We had to define the product and idea, come up with market variables, do some basic (very basic) marketing research to determine the demand, run financial numbers, determine the type of business (LLC, LLP, S-Corp, C-Corp, etc), define roles for each participating member (it's a group project), present to the class at various stages along the way, deliver a final written business plan and make the presentation to several third parties to convince them our ideal had traction.

In short, that was the greatest class ever.  It was definitely a college course specifically designed to help people start a business and know all the steps of the process.  It was a ton of work, but what I got out of it was invaluable.

Other than that, classes this term were either mediocre or downright sucked.  I won't bore everyone with the details, but I wasn't happy with them, I just did the work and got out.

Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying school.  In a way I am somewhat surprised because I was kind of expecting stupid young kids and boring classes.  However, even though some classes didn't get my blood pumping, those that do, really do.  It is very exciting to me to be involved with some of the teachers.  Almost all of them have had real world experience in the business world, or in many cases even run their own successful businesses.  Their ability to integrate practical applications to the material brings new aspects to the class.  Additionally, these people know other people who hire people, hopefully, people like me.

Now, most of the students squander their time, don't care about it, and are getting maybe 10-15% of what they could out of the classes, but that's their loss, not mine.  It's frustrating to watch and listen to kids bitch about the teachers and classes I like, when they aren't "getting it".  I am nearly convinced that college is wasted on the young.  I know some of these kids are getting a lot of out of it, but so many just want the famed "piece of paper" that they are missing what is really available to them.

These are the same kids who many of my friends believe make up the majority of college students.  It's not the majority but it is a sickeningly high number.  These are definitely the group of people who caused the phrase "it's just a piece of paper" to exist.  Going into my senior year, I have determined college is what you make it.  A's, B's or C's, don't really matter, but learning the material and getting the most out of the experience do matter.  I will still try and get A's by the way.  It's a pride, ego, even hubris thing at this point.

Family Life

The family is doing great.  My kids are scarily brilliant.  My wife is wonderful.  Best wife EVAH!.  Who rocks?  SUSAN ROCKS!

Seriously though, Susan has been great this last year.  I have been thinking about some things recently.  She has always told me that I am the stable one that helps her flighty aspects and grounds her.  That may be true, but she is the one who is really a rock for me to stand on.  She will have her own achievements in life, but I fully believe that she and her actions have and will continue to be integral to my achievements.  We work very well together.  She tends to keep things light sometimes, and I calm her down when she's stressing about a move that is still 2 and 1/2 weeks away.  When I need to stay late to study, she says "Do what you need to do, I have the kids".  I am thrilled that I have been able to find a partner that matches me as well as she does.  I wish everyone the same luck.

The kids and their scary brilliance.  My son is two and doing great.  He is well into the terrible stage of the two's, but I get to watch him learn new words, and put together sentences.  I have watched him run around the backyard yelling "Dada!  Aiyplay!  Dada, Aiplay! Co oon, Looo, Dada Aiplay!" which for those of you not versed in David speak, translates to Dad, it's an airplane, Dad, pay attention here, it's an airplane!.  Airplanes ROCK, they fly across the sky and leave neat trails, Come on Dad, Look, it's an airplane!

To which I ask "David, is that an airplane?" and he says "YESH!" which I take as "yes, dad, I only just said it like a dozen times, jeez man, catch up here".  These are just some of the minor feats my cute little blonde charmer is capable of.  He has every single teacher at his daycare wrapped around his little finger.  It's amusing to watch actually.  I think he will miss it there, and I almost wish he could stay because I know he likes it there.  Who wouldn't when everyone caters to his wishes.  Not sure that is helping the terrible part of the terrible twos though.

So little miss Sara.  Sara played the lead part in the little red hen play at school, in which she was the little red hen.  She was very cute and did very well with her part.  In addition to being cute, she has other skills.  Her math skills amaze me.  She is doing stuff, I know I wasn't doing until second grade, before the end of kindergarten.  Her favorite show is cyberchase in which three kids transport into a cyber world and use math and logic skills to defeat "the hacker".  Yes, the premise could use some work, however, they effectively make math interesting and she frequently works out the problems they are solving on her own.  She often reverts to baby talk because she thinks it is cute, but also has extremely adult conversations regarding all kinds of topics.  She and her mother were talking about basic monetary theory the other day.  She is creative, outgoing, and extremely intelligent.  Oh, and she's cute too..

All in all, my kids are all an overly proud parent could ask for.  Combined with Susan I feel blessed again.

So, work was a negative, however, the rest of my life really feels like it is coming together.  I am in a much happier place most of the time.  I can still feel the depression hovering and I know it's not gone yet, but it is receding into the distance.  Being away from my parents both at work and home and seeing them only rarely will probably help that a great deal since a large number of my unresolved issues revolve around them.

Oh one last thing.  My guild in wow erupted and then imploded, and the remaining pieces exploded.  And then I was made guild leader.  Hooray!  So wow will be interesting over the summer.  I will spend the summer slowly rebuilding the guild and getting people back into the good relationships we used to have.  Hell, hopefully we get to raid some too...

At least I will have something to occupy my mind other than Do do do do Dora the Explorer!, Grab your backpack, Jump In! Let's GO!

Until I decide to update again...
