Now that my brother finally has a Wii, I got a chance to play a bit of "Red Steel," the Wii's premier first person shooter game. The best way I can describe the controls for that game is with an analogy: playing an FPS using the "Wii-mote" is a lot like trying to eat spaghetti with a spoon, you could definitely do it, but it's really difficult and you might as well use a fork. Similarly, it's possible to play a FPS with a Wii-mote, but it's so cumbersome and difficult that you might as well stick to an original controller. It would be more natural if it was like those are arcade games where you hold the gun and shoot the screen, but unfortunately, the controller is very awkward feeling and just doesn't feel right, making the aiming extremely difficult and cumbersome. Perhaps it takes some getting used to, but in my opinion, I think you might as well stick to Goldeneye or something on standard controllers. One highlight of the controllers, however, is the ability to "parry" and "slash" using a sword, which would be rather difficult with a regular controller, but still, I'm more partial towards standard controllers.
All in all, while the entire idea of FPS with Wii and Wii-mote is clever (for instance, one you lock on to a target, you physically move the controller closer to the screen to zoom; to reload, you take the "nunchuk" [the Wii-mote attachment] and physically shake it; but shaking the nunchuk also: opens doors, picks up items, and launches grenades, so occasionally, when you want to reload, you end up doing a crap load of things you DON'T want to do), I don't see the point of "revolutionizing" the way people play FPS when the more traditional/standard way worked just fine, if not better. Stick to the fork, not a spoon.
