GenCon 2008 Weekend!!
Yay!! So I get to GenCon after having the last post.. and.. guess what? They lost my badge! They said I asked to have it mailed to me, but I am certain I said 'pickup'... so they inform me of GenCon policy that they are not responsible for lost/stolen items, including badges lost in the mail! Great.. but this year policy was changing so things could be tracked thru the mail, so I had to pay half the price again to get my 4 day ticket validated.. so $40. Bit of an auspicious beginning.
But overall, I had a great time! Saw a lot of friends there, some I hadn't seen in a while! Won the game 'Say Anything'... I only had run up and down the GenCon dealers area screaming out "I won a free game at Northstar Games!". But hey, a free game is a free game! hehe.. Also got to playtest several games, including the new Talisman game coming out in December... Fantastic! I really rather liked it. Played in several other games, and even played a huge version of Settlers of Catan. Huge as in the dice were the smallest things there, and they were like 2" square! hehe.. The board was made up of 1' hexagons, that were well detailed. Played that with Bill, Tim, and Steve.. Steve won.
Did True Dungeon for the first time, and I loved it! It was fantastic! I played the wizard of the group and felt very useful. I was also made official lightbearer for the Rogue to help with the traps, cause I could anticipate where the Rogue wanted the light, and a fairly steady hand, and took direction well... and always ensured I was keeping the light out of the rogue's eyes! We didn't fail a single trap! :) Yay!! We did it on puzzle version, and played with my normal gaming group plus a few friends. So overall it was: Me, Kent, Stacy, Nick, Kat, Ronson, one other (can't remember his name), and a girl I didn't know well named Teresa.. I even found a secret treasure, but couldn't get at it and had to call the Rogue over (Stacy) to get it for me once I pointed it out. We completed every room, usually well in advance, except the first room, we coudln't figure out the wooden puzzle, but everything else we did finish ahead of time and were the first group all weekend (we ran the 2nd night (Friday) in Puzzle mode) to not only complete the mega Sudoku puzzle, decipher it, place the orb in Pelor's hands, and also defeat the Big Boss at the end! YAY! Got a True Dungeon survivor pin for 2008, which several previous dungeoneers were miffed at because they died! hehe.. and some nice tokens. I was very grateful to Kent who set this all up, cause I'd always wanted to do True Dungeon, but had never had a chance to,... so I let him have his pick of whatever items I found... Cause he also pimped us out for our dungeon run.
Got to have a few good heart to hearts with a couple people.. and got pulled over by the cops Sat night taking my friend Ninja home, but luckily didn't get a ticket cause I had made an illegal turn, but he kept kinda flashing his GenCon badge so the cop could see it and he'd realize we were conventioneers.. so he let me off with just a verbal warning.. WHEW! Thank you Ninja!! I never get out of tickets! LOL
Got to play some Werewolf too, which was fun... It was a shame too, we had a nice 29 person mega-village going on, and I got the Seer card... and just after I cleared some friends I knew I could signal, I got killed by the wolves. :( Darnit.
Unfortunately it ended on a rather bad note. We went to a dinner at Buca di Beppo's and it was a few people I didn't know, and several I did... It was a mixer for MIBs and friends, but evidentally it wasn't exactly explained as that.. so there were some insulting things said to the non-MIB's which I think everyone took offense to (obviously not from anyone that knew the non-MIB's) and the guy next to me threw a whiney, crybaby tantrum because he was being excluded out of what he wanted to order there. Cause a huge scene in the middle of Buca.. NOT fun. I mean he exploded, and I was sitting next to this guy thinking "Oh my god, he's going psycho, and I'm the closest person". So I was ready to get out of there.... but I stuck it out because of my friends, but I did go out and have a ciggie to get away from him for a while and took a friend of mine with me.
Made it back alive and well from the con.. now to try to catch up on email, Tivo recordings, sort thru the loot, and oh ya, get some sleep, cause I have to be up bright and early in the morning! heh... Ciao!
