fallen

in the aftermath of a deadly december, who visited us with an unnatural cold, who squeezed us to the point of total exhaustion, who challenged us to look beyond ourselves and see the messes we've made for ourselves.

we thought we were losing it. our world was caving in on us and we didn't know which way was up. sinking deeper into the debris of our own fallenness we grope in the darkness, desperate to grab hold of something to shine our way out.

we are cold and bankrupt and bereft of all hope and on the brink of what seems like a final collapse when something brilliant glimmers in the distance. we don't know how long it would take to get there by foot, but we move forward anyway.

the eastern sky shines with something orange and otherworldly and yet so somehow familiar... we move in a caravan as the magi in search of this treasure. we have nothing to offer but our tears and our bruises and our memories as pray these to be acceptable gifts as we have no more gold to offer.
