mets Day 07 - Your Favorite Female TV Character(s)
Nancy Botwin, Patty Hewes, Buffy Summers, Brenda Chenowith, Claire Fisher, Georgia Lass , Lilah Morgan
01. Nancy Botwin (Weeds) - Nancy was my first choice for this category, because her character is unlike any other female character that has ever appeared on television. She's not your average female character that yearns for true love or a successful career. She's rather complicated and deeply flawed. She started out as a caring mother who became a drug dealer out of desperation and turned into a selfish, reckless and self-destructive woman over the course of the series. As the show went on, it was revealed that she is also a danger junkie and that she likes to be sexually dominated, but ironically she's usually the one in control in every single one of her relationships. What makes Nancy the most interesting female character for me is the fact that she's a complicated, fully-developed character and that she is far away from the female archetype that is so often shown in movies and on television.
02. Buffy Summers (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) - Buffy is the perfect example of how you write a young adolescent with superpowers. She doesn't whine about them, though she is reluctant to accept her destiny at the beginning of the show, but she's well aware of the responsibilities that she has and grows into a leader. She constantly has to make difficult decisions and is also willing to have personal sacrifices for the greater good. At the same time, she is full of life (for most of the show's run), intelligent and sympathetic.
03. Georgia Lass (Dead Like Me) - Georgia is a disaffected young teenager who doesn't know what to do with her life or who to be. That is until she dies and learns about life in the afterlife. Her sarcasm, her initial irresponsibility and her disorientation in life make her easy to relate to and it's reassuring to see a character who is smart, but yet has trouble finding her ways and doesn't seem to go anywhere in life despite her intelligence. She lends her voice to a generation of young people who are usually underrepresented.
04. Brenda Chenowith (Six Feet Under) - Brenda is another deeply flawed character. Afraid of commitment, abandonment and intimacy, but independent, confident and emancipated at the same time. Her parents sold her out in her childhood, which is why she is also suspicious and has a hard time trusting people. Over the course of the series, she matures and ultimately grows to be a functional woman, despite all her issues. Which is admirable.
05. Patty Hewes (Damages) - Patty is tough to survive in an environment that is otherwise dominated by men. She is ambitious and pursues her interests with all her attention, sometimes ruthlessly. You can't play nice to achieve something. Patty is interesting to watch, because she is in a position of power, but she had to give up a lot to get there. She built up walls around herself and didn't allow herself to appear vulnerable to others, because it is a weakness. But as the show moved along, her walls were slowly torn down and it became more apparent to her, what she had to give up to get where she is now.
06. Claire Fisher (Six Feet Under) - Claire is kind of a loner and doesn't care much about what people think about her. She's an observer and an artist. She can see through other people's disguises. She is not afraid to speak her mind and to be different. She would rather go her own way and fail than to take other people's bullshit. She cares deeply about the people in her life, even when her relationships with them are rather complicated.
07. Lilah Morgan (Angel) - Lilah Morgan started out as Angel's sexy, seductive, manipulative and sassy enemy and while she never belongend to the show's main cast, she was probably the most interesting female character on the entire show despite of how little she actually got to do. Aside from her belonging to the show's core group of villains, we never learned much about her, but under the surface there was always an underlying vulnerability that suggested that she was more than just an one-note-character. Her relationship with Wesley in season four fleshed her out a bit more and it's a pity that she was written out of the show, when she was just getting more interesting material. Anyhow, I've included her as one of my favorite female characters, because she was a delightfully morally grey character with a lot of depth hidden behind her exterior.
