I got my name in the Gainesville Sun Campus Edition Tuesday. I called Monday afternoon to tell them about the Asian American student rally to show the campus that our vote does count. The plan was to get a crowd started and then to proceed to the voting polls. I just wanted some reporter to possibly cover the event. Instead she used me as a source for a front-page story and talked briefly about the event:
http://gvillesun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060228/NEWS/60228004&SearchID=73237368932297 Student Government oversees a budget of more than $12 million.
To fight student apathy, the Asian American Student Union plans a rally at 12:30 p.m. in Turlington Plaza to encourage students to vote.
After a dance and a skit, the audience will march to vote at a polling location, said Marvin Halelamien, a member in AASU. Representatives from both the Swamp party and the Unite party will be on hand to explain their platforms to interested students.
The purpose of the rally is two-fold, Halelamien said. It will demonstrate to Student Government the importance of paying attention to UF's Asian American community, and it will encourage more students to vote. “I think most people still are pretty apathetic to voting,” he said.
I probably would not have known I was in the story if Adine, a girl from my editing class, did not tell me.
On Wednesday I was published in the Alligator for voting article. Apparently there were problems with the computers during voting. Everyone I spoke to, however, did not say there was a problem. I did not think the picture was that good, but Andrea put it on the front page. I was not even sure it was going to be a story. I was surprised.
