Mike: So the rate is 327 divided by 15.5. Let me see what that is.

Me: (a second later) That's about 21.1

Mike: It's 21.09. Did you do that in your head?

Me: Yeah.

Mike: (shaking his head) Damn! That's crazy.

Got to love that Indian high school education and disallowing use of calculators till college. I'm no math

How much longer did it take Mike to do it? I mean... I'm totally impressed that you can do it in your head, and it sure is handy for calculating the tip at a restaurant... but I just wonder how practical or impractical calculator use is in a field environment like that.

Mike took one more second. Calculator use is very practical even in a field environment. Also, I always like to double check my mental math before applying it on the floor.

Doing small calculations mentally has no real use. I just kinda enjoy it :).
