would you rather be hated for who you are or loved for what you're not? this is the most ridiculous question i've ever heard. but answer it, because i don't have the energy, and you can pretend you're an intellect for the beef.

So what I suppose I'm saying is that A can love B for thinking that B is intelligent, and the love still exists whether or not B is intelligent. For whatever reason A came to the conclusion doesn't matter. If you ask A, "Do you love B?" A will say "Yes." If A finds out B doesn't have the attribute they thought existed, A doesn't automatically shrug and say "Oh. Well. I don't love B anymore." If that were true, then so many movies and songs would never have been made. You can, in fact, love a lie.
They're both ugly situations that exist in the real world, if not the theoretical, but if you want to read between the lines, the question is, "What kind of attention do you want lavished on you? Would you rather be the cruel one or would you rather the world be the antagonist?" as the other person has pointed out.
