...I'm not one of those people who obsessively checks every commenter's userinfo to see if I've really been credited. I don't even require credit for the hundreds of icons I have made (although I do always appreciate receiving it). When you get right down to it, I didn't make (the vast majority of) the artwork I use, and more often than not, the text I add is a verbatim quote from the source material, too.
What do I do? I make every icon from a screencap I have taken (I don't use cap communities). I often adjust colour and sharpness and that sort of thing. I crop. I add text, I add brushes and effects, I add borders and sometimes other small touches.
I make the icons I do because it's fun. I enjoy it. I also enjoy making icons that other people like and use... it's a good feeling to know someone else likes something you have made, however small and cosmically insignificant that may be. Some of them take me a lot of time, and I once got pissy and foot-stampy over someone else modifying an icon I had made just for me. I decided that was silly, and would rather spread the love than chase after people demanding recognition. (I know other icon-makers feel differently, and that's fine--to each his/her own.)
But there is a big difference between not requiring credit for my work and being okay with someone taking credit for my work.
This post contains a Simpsons icon I made ("Go suck a Bible!"), as well as one made by
_tayler (the pointy retro bra one). I don't much care if people share my icons, but this post was submitted to at least one icon community as this person's work. That irritates me.
Thanks again to
fritters for noticing my icon and letting me know. Ultimately, I can't do anything about it--if you read the comments you'll (maybe) see that trying to discuss this with
0vary did nothing but ban me from her journal, since that was the best response she could come up with. *much rolling of eyes* Whatever. It's both flattering and lame to have someone claim credit for one of my little pictures... she couldn't make her own? And really, since I don't even seek credit, how hard is it to say 'I didn't make these, but they're cool and for sharing?!'
Some people.
EDIT: As I suspected, almost all of my comments have been deleted, except for those she'd like to use to try to make me look like an ass. Aww. That's adorable. ;D
